Saturday Special: A Festival of Birds

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, it’s likely many of us will be spending our weekend grocery shopping and “pre-cooking.” We’ll be spending our Thanksgiving Day with some close friends, as we have a few times before, and our two families are starting to develop our own traditions. Amy makes pumpkin pie; I make pecan. The men engage in good-natured debate about turkey-roasting methods, and the picky children squirm at the table until released to go watch The Little Mermaid for the seven zillionth time. Which means it’s pretty much like every other time we get together, except with twice as much food. I am very grateful to have such good friends to share our holiday with when we can’t travel to be with our extended families, and also that I get to make the pecan pie. My pecan pie rocks. What is your Thanksgiving pièce de résistance?

Quilt of the Week

Our Quilt of the Week was picked by GenQ’s In-House Designer (wasn’t that turkey block yesterday awesome?) Scott Hansen. He found this mini quilt, made by Peggy of Organic Baby Quilts, while wandering through Flickr, and says, “Talk about a small bit of surprise and delight. The little birds are so free-form, and I think it’s cool how the birds bodies are simple fabric shapes and all the details are in the threads! Of course the red and blue is one of my favorite color combinations. Not every quilt that wows has to be large.”

The quilt is available for purchase at Peggy’s Etsy shop.

Blog Post of the Week

Looks like Scott has fallen in love with one of our favorite blogs, one we featured in our 55 Best Quilting Blogs article for Quilter’s Home earlier this year: Modern Day Quilts. He was taken with a recent post about the International Quilt Festival, the event that follows Market. “I should go to this site everyday just because she has such a good eye.  This post in particular I think is one of those gotta check out posts, because it has a link to all the pictures that she took at International Quilt Festival plus the info sheets telling you more about these amazing quilts (and if they are for sale!) The details in some of these quilts are just amazing.”

I’ll be spending Thanksgiving this year at my sister’s house. She’s an awesome cook! My T’giving specialty is garlic mashed potatoes, made with freshly roasted garlic, a stick of butter & real heavy cream – I figure it’s only once a year, why skimp?
What a cute wallhanging! I love that aqua & red combo too, and the birds are peeping good. 🙂

Lovin’ these little birdies with the great detail in thread and cheerful colors. Would look great in a baby’s nursery.
