Thank you!

Trite old sayings are well-used for a good reason–they have truth. So here’s one old saying: “All good things must come to an end.” And here’s another one: “I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.”  And here’s why these are part of our truth: When Scott Hansen joined us at the beginning of our big adventure, we all knew we were traveling down that “road less traveled” and it has made all the difference! With staff scattered to four time zones, we have grown a real live magazine, and Scott has been an integral part of that. As our Community Editor, he has curated quilts, worked with the “talent,” represented us at Quilt Market, produced our Block Builder puzzle feature and done many many interviews for our I Am GenQ feature in each issue. He’s also designed many quilts for us, including the Patchwork Almanac that he designed and is working on for our entire 2016 year.
So now here’s the “all good things come to an end” part. After some serious contemplation and discussion, Scott is stepping away from his role as our Community Editor and moving into a more supporting role as a designer and contributor. And as importantly, he is taking time to grow Blue Nickel Studios, his design company, and release more original patterns.

So, we thought we’d take a few moments to share some of our favorite photos of Scott (whom we called Cabana Boy until someone suggested it was not dignified), and some favorite memories:

Unique shirts and a sense of fun, that’s our Cabana Boy. From left, Megan Dougherty, Melissa, Scott, and Jake Finch.

The guy himself…our Cabana Boy.

Here’s what Senior Editor Tracy Mooney has to say: “When I first met Scott, Jan Peeples was making him these incredible shirts that were color-blocked and bright. He has since made several himself and when I think of Scott, that’s what I think – bright shirts, handlebar mustache. It makes him look like a walking version of one of his beautiful quilts. I worked with his daughter on the very first year of We Sew 2 and it was so much fun. Clearly the talent runs deep in his family. Good luck Scott in all of your future endeavors!”

Teri’s favorite memories are of Scott’s daily morning videos when the rest of us were away at Quilt Market. You know, we ALL need more morning videos encouraging us on our day. You are a sensitive, caring soul. Quilt on! P.S. you owe me two blog posts.

Doesn’t everyone have a sparrow ring?

Editor-in-Chief Melissa Thompson Maher remembers the very first time she met Scott in person, at the 2012 Kansas City Market where GenQ debuted its first print issue:

“This will sound odd, but I particularly remember his enormous sparrow ring! It was so big that I found myself wondering if it actually hurt to wear. We also shared many private text conversations about our political and spiritual views, which are similar, and talked about our hopes and dreams for our families. I have loved watching him grow as a writer in the I am GenQ pieces. I also loved working with him on the Quarters story about his house (which he built!) that ran in our November-December 2015 issue. I admire his signature style, and the fact that he has not let trends or quilt ‘fashion’ push him off his path. He has vastly more design potential, talent and ability than many people know. He is coming into his own, and we are delighted he has been a part of our beginnings at Generation Q. (And Scott, don’t think for a minute you’re off the hook for everything. We WILL be calling. Hugs, sweetie!)”

And now for something completely different. In addition to her strange web goddess abilities, Teri Lucas is adding Seeker of All Amazing Quilts to her job description. She, along with Melissa, will now be handling the Quilt Submissions for Generation Q. Email Teri, teri@generationqmagazine.com and Melissa, melissa@generationqmagazine.com. We can tell you she’s off-her-rocker excited about this.

Quilt. Sew. Live. Breathe.

How about ” when one door closes….another opens,”? Good luck and thank you, Scott.
