How would we survive these days without a little help from our friends? Heather Jones, of Olive and Ollie, stepped up to play with us, and just in the nick of time as we struggle to finish producing our premiere print issue. With a bunch of scraps from Community Editor Scott Hansen, Heather whipped up this uber-adorable doll and quilt set for her uber-adorable (just look below if you don’t believe us!) Olivia. We especially love two things about these projects: Heather’s workmanship on the doll and how much the Olivia Doll looks like the Olivia Daughter. Way to go Heather!!! She will have a pattern prepared shortly and we will provide the links then, but for now, it’s all about Show-and-Tell. A little over a month ago, my friend Scott asked if I’d like any scraps of Denyse Schmidt’s Flea Market Fancy: The Legacy Collection, to play with. And of course, I said yes! I missed out on most of the FMF buzz the first time around, so I was anxious to get my hands on some of these beautiful prints. Scott suggested I wanted to make something with the scraps and share it with you all, and this is what I came up with.
I had made a soft cloth doll for my little girl’s third birthday, using an adorable pattern by Bit of Whimsy Dolls. Olivia absolutely loves that doll, which she named Ramen (!?!), and she still plays with her to this day. But I’ve been wanting to make her another doll, one that I designed, so this was the perfect excuse to play with a pattern that I had drawn up a while ago. And the Flea Market Fancy prints were the perfect fabrics to use for this vintage-inspired project.
This sweet doll, whom Olivia has already named after herself, is made from solid cotton, Moda Bella, in natural. And I absolutely love her golden hair, which is made from wool yarn. Her arms and legs have button joints so she can move around a bit, and even sit on her own if positioned correctly.
Olivia’s favorite color is pink, so I made the doll’s dress out of the Eyelet in Pink print.
And of course, Olivia the Doll needs a quilt, right? I made a simple patchwork out of five of the prints to coordinate with her dress: Medallion in green, Seedpod Stripe in pink, Eyelet in green, Bouquet in turquoise and Eyelet in pink. It’s backed with the Flower and Dot in green and I used Fizzy Dot in pink for the binding.
I’ll be producing the pattern for the doll in the next few weeks, after I tweak a couple of things. I’m thinking of adding a few more things as well, like some cute little shoes, and she definitely needs some bloomers too!
The best part? Olivia absolutely loves her and has kept the doll by her side since I gave her to her a few days ago.
