Quilt(s) of the Week

Who says quilts have to be made of fabric? Well, okay, we all pretty much do, but in certain circumstances, other materials can be used in patchwork forms. That’s how we get quilty jewelry, after all. Memphis artist Greely Myatt grew up in the deep South and can remember colorful quilts hanging on clotheslines when he was growing up. So he decided to bring that memory to the big city, but instead of sewing up his creations out of cotton and thread, he used recycled street signs. The 4-by-12-foot panels are on display outside of the Memphis City Hall, where they hide the building’s HVAC system. Go here to read more about Myatt and his project and here to see more photos of the installation taken by Free Spirit fabric designer Jeanean Morrison.

Blog Post of the Week

Sew Sweetness

Well, I am just a sucker for a good quilt-along these days, and when I spotted this one I had to completely re-think my quilting and sewing projects for the next few months. If you’ve got the paper piecing bug like I do, you’ll want to check out this New York Beauty Quilt Along from Sara at SewSweetness (and several other bloggers as well—Sara’s blog was where I discovered it so she gets the credit!). I’m dying to see what comes out of this from all the participants, so I’ll be keeping an eye on the Flickr group as well.

OMG! Those quilt panels are incredible. He had the same instincts our foremothers had when they used up and remade objects of beauty. Thank you for sharing.
