Generation Q has big news! But first some other news.
Pacific International Quilt Fest (PIQF) is welcoming the modern quilting aesthetic with a new category in its upcoming competition and a challenge.
“Modern Quilts are becoming a changing force in the art of quilt making,” says David Mancuso of Mancuso Show Management, which produces PIQF.“Modern Quilting has been a part of the quilting world throughout much of the 20th century, always appealing to younger quilters.”
Slowly but surely however, it has been gaining popularity among older, traditional quilters. Which is why the new Modern Quilt category at this year’s Pacific International Quilt Festival XXIV will be themed Mid-Century Mod. Quilters submitting entries are asked explore such influences as Frank Lloyd Wright, Charles & Ray Eames, Piet Mondrian, Mark Rothko, Victor Vasarely, Joan Miro, and Paul Klee, to name a few. Quilters will compete for prize money and ribbons with “Best Mid-Century Modern” being the top award. The entry deadline is Oct. 1, 2015. (Click here to enter on-line or here to enter by mail.)

Select accepted entries for the Modern Quilt category will also be on display a week prior to PIQF at Mancuso’s Quiltfest Oasis in Palm Springs, California, Oct. 8-10. This is the second year for Quiltfest.
“What better place to introduce modern quilts into our shows than where the modern movement is so vibrant, in Palm Springs, not to mention the rest of California?” says David Mancuso.
And classes, Q-bies there will be Modern Quilting Classes. More on that in a couple of weeks.
And finally our news
As one of the few magazines actively covering the modern quilt movement, Generation Q Magazine is the Official Media Sponsor of Pacific International Quilt Fest and Quiltfest Oasis. Look for our booth or display at both shows, and continue to watch the blog for more information about the emeging modern inflence at both QuiltFest and PIQF. See you there!
