Dazzle: Dye Candy Fabrics by Shady Grove Studios

We are such suckers for clear, pure color. And we do love a fine piece o’ bling. So finding these tasty brooches, earrings and pendants made by Chris Daly of Dye Candy Fabrics was like finding the last super-mega-doorbuster special at a fave store on Black Friday. Gotta. Have. It.

Square in a Square brooch

Flying Geese brooch

Chris’ main stock in trade is hand-dyed fabric—cottons, jacquards and velvets—that she produces using Procion Mx dyes for deep, rich, saturated colors. Along the way, though, she started piecing tiny bits of her hand-dyeds into quilty “blocks” such as Flying Geese and Square in a Square, and then finishing them as fine jewelry.

The jewelry “blocks” are machine-pieced onto muslin, sandwiched between glass and joined with lead-free solder. Each piece is signed by the artist.

Flower pendant

Brooches are a scant 1 ½ square, and retail for $25. Earrings—priced at $52—have earwires of surgical steel, measure 5/8 inch by 1 ¼ inch and weigh only two-tenths of an ounce. Pendants run $25 each, and are about the same size as one earring.

We really love the richness Chris achieves in her  hand-dyed work, and the elegance of her color combinations in these tiny bits of adornment. Couldn’t you just see a few of these hanging on the Christmas tree, let alone your precious earlobes? (No, literally. The subtle glint and rich color put some of our timeworn tree baubles totally to shame!)

Square in a Square earrings

And don’t miss Chris’ blog where you can see more of her handcrafted goodness, including some breathtaking stained glass suncatchers. (Those, sadly, seem destined for her wholesale clients, but you should still have a look.)
