Modern Rainbow – 14 Imaginative Quilts That Play With Color by Rebecca Bryan (published by C&T Publishing Stash Books, 120 pages, $24.95) will be that book that modern quilters turn to for years to come to learn how to hone an understanding of color and how to use color in their quilts. Rebecca starts with The Basics, with an explanation of the Color Spectrum and a guide to help us understand how to sort our fabrics from solids to tone-on-tone and multi-colored prints that is a guide for use in our quilts and how to sort them in our sewing rooms. She writes of contrast, using colors out of order, omitting colors and including other palates in our quilts for an effective use in our quilts.
Rebecca offers a few sources of inspiration from watching color trends to the colors on the selvages of yardage and paint store sample chips (this is fun!) to our favorite blogs/bloggers.
The quilts in the book range from Modern and Modern Traditional to Improvisational and Liberated embracing her love of all quilts and quilting styles. Rebecca says, “I love many types of quilting styles, so the patterns are divided into these categories: modern traditional, modern, and improvisational and liberated. Each of these categories has its own approach to quiltmaking. Be sure to read each section’s introduction for special tips.” She offers the opportunity to look at the box of our own quilting style and see how other styles are informed by that. Because the patterns in the book have such a wide range she has included a wide range of information in the chapter, “Techniques and Sewing Basics” including how to use the 45 degree marks on the ruler and how to piece curved seams.
The quilts range in skill level offering something for every quilter, from the simple log cabin style of Bubbles to the more complicated looking hexagons in Huckleberry.

I struggle with pinks. I’m not really a fan, but I’m in baby quilt making mode so sometimes it is necessary. For baby girl quilts, mostly I’m avoiding pink and opting for other gender neutral or more subtly girly choices.
White i love white and you use it alot but it gets dirty way to easy…..and i have a hard time bringing orange into a quilt lol unless its halloween of course..ps . love your quilts….ty for sharing
COMMENT #3
I have the hardest time with purples… guess mostly because it is not one of my favorite colors! I am SO trying to embrace it more:) I have been trying to sneak in a piece or 2 in my projects lately:) Slowly making friends:) The book look so interesting!!!!
Struggle? I love and use them all!
COMMENT #
I am with Cynthia, I like to use them all, no struggle here!
I struggle with using red the most. I really should make a quilts with reds and get over it.
Purple is a color I am not fond of and seldom use. Although I sometimes add a little purple when it’s just what a quilt needs. Recently there seem to be more “pretty” purples available – clearer colors, less lilac tones, and less dingy looking. I think I could use some of those. And of course a rainbow quilt is a perfect way to incorporate all colors — favorite or not.
Love the Wavelength quilt. The color I seem to struggle with is green. I have a lot of it but don’t seem to use it well. I want to make a rainbow quilt so this looks like a great book for me. Thanks!
the thing I want to try is working with low volume fabrics-but I am not sure where to start…I love the low volume quilt that didn’t make it into the book with the rainbow quilting….such a fun idea!
I think I struggle the most with green which is surprising because it is my favorite color. I’d love to make that Huckleberry pattern and then I can sneak some green into that. Thanks for the chance to win!
I struggle using yellow in anything. I tried to use in a couple of quilts and it seems like it overpowers the other colors
COMMENT #11
I struggle with orange, do not like it. And push to the side even when the color wheel tells me it would look good.
I like the color orange but don’t seem to be able to use it much. I love your wavelength quilt.
I’m not big on pastel colors and don’t use them in my quilts. Maybe I need a book called “Modern Pastels.” LOL
COMMENT #14
Yellow because I feel like there aren’t many shades of it like there are of other colors. Trying to get a gradient for a rainbow is very tricky for me.
I want to make a storm at sea quilt and I am struggling to find the right blues/aquas to make the quilt show movement. I love the Flames quilt and would love to try that pattern.
Bright yellow is hard for me because it seems to grab attention so quickly. I’m planning to match it with dark gray and maybe navy and see how that goes. Thanks for showing so many examples from this book. When I read the title I wasn’t sure it was a great match for me, but now I am certain I could learn a lot from this book.
HELLO,I struggle with differing shades of green. Looking at natures choices helps. These posted projects are so beautiful !Thanks for a neat Book Giveaway !
Orange seems to be a struggle for me. Mostly it is the blending colors. I would love to do a modern rainbow quilt with lots of solid white and beautiful quilting.
I struggle with brown. My solution? Enjoy the other colors in the rainbow instead!
I love purple but find it difficult to use. I don’t even have much in my stash and it has been my fave since I was small. I think I need to try a range of purples all at once. I tend to like the most vibrant of every color and really neglect the lighter, more subtle hues. Using a range might help ease the color into my projects. Thanks! notwendy gmail
COMMENT #21
I find that blues can be difficult to work with–so many variations, so many trends (don’t know if I will ever use up all my colonial blues…).
Gold and muddy yellows. I just can’t bring myself to really like those two colors but if I put them with greens and rusts it might work. I just need to convince myself that it’s a pretty Autumn color theme and if nature thinks its perfect then it must be a wonderful color to use.
I struggle with mixing colors when they don’t match completely! Sad, I know!
The color I struggle with is orange-it always seems too bright!
Yellow is the color I have most problems with using … a little bit goes a loooong way with me. 🙂

I have a hard time with purples simply because they are often duller that other colors. I think it’s hard to find a clear bright purple with the same intensity as the other colors of the rainbow.
I have trouble using brown. It always seems to be such a dull color, no matter the shade. I’m not sure on the best way to use it!
Orange is very popular but it overpowers every quilt so I struggle with where and how to use it.
I struggle with using red. I like the idea of using red with a neutral in a two-color quilt, but am not sure how to use it effectively with other colors.
My colors I struggle with are the brown family. I seem to use bright colors in most all my quilts, so, using browns have always been a stretch for me.
Orange. Ugh. It’s just not my thing. However, in a rainbow ( of course) or paired with blues it can be quite lovely
COMMENT #32
Purple is my problem color ~ don’t know why. It’s kind of strange because I loved wearing it. I do have friends that like it and recently made a mini with purple in it and gave it to my friend (she loves it) ~ it wasn’t all bad!
Thanks for the giveaway!
Thing that orange would be the color I struggle with the most. I can never seem to find the perfect spot to put it, so I just leave it out.
I struggle most with brown/tan, and I FINALLY got rid of a bunch of brown by using it as a neutral with my “rainbow” of selvedge feathers. I don’t HATE it so much anymore. 🙂
COMMENT #35
Bright greens are a problem for me……I prefer the olive, brown tones.
I struggle the most with purples. It is not one of my favorite colors, so I have a hard time using it. This book looks fantastic and thanks for the chance to win a copy.
Red. I love the color, and love it in quilts but struggle with incorporating in my pieces.
I struggle most with Orange, probably because I’m not particularly a fan of the color in general. But making things with rainbows forces me to use even those colors I’m not typically as drawn to!
There is a green-y brown-y yellow color that seems to be popular but I have a hard time using it.
I love them all, but haven’t used low volume yet, and really want to make one. I especially love the low volume rainbow quilt that didn’t make it into the book-but is fabulous!
My problem colour is yellow. It’s difficult to get just the right amount. Too little and it looks like an afterthought. Too much, and it takes over the quilt.
My mom’s favorite color was always orange. It’s not my favorite, but I have tried to incorporate it into projects I’ve made just to remind me of her. I just have a hard time fitting it into my favorites with are purple, pinks and lime green!
I struggle with browns . . . I use these more for contrasting in my quilts
COMMENT #44
I struggle with brown – I find it hard to work in , tho I’m trying to use it in a charity quilt I’m working on now.
I struggle the most with odd greens. I can’t think of anything to do with them other than nothing.
purple is the hardest for me. I am able to use colors I don’t “like” when I’m trying to make something for someone else. I can channel what I think they would be looking for.
I don’t use much brown or pink in quilts. But, of all things, someone gave me a brown and pink table topper, and I absolutely LOVE it!
I struggle using purple. I like purple and just do not have much of it in my stash. For some reason, I tend to veer away from buy purple not only fabric but also clothing. I’m trying to embrace all colors more and not my favorite – blue.
Love the quilts in “Modern Rainbow”! I don’t use red very often, and I’m not sure why. Love the use of red in quilts, but it’s just not my favorite color to use. Maybe this book will help!
I hardly ever use orange in a quilt. Wavelength and Flame are just gorgeous. Can’t wait to get the book.
I love a bright rainbow of colors but I struggle to love orange. It seems hot to me. Silly huh?
I have trouble with Brown’s and other dark colors. I’ve been wanting to try to make some trees with brown but have colorful foliage. Thanks for a chance!

I love red but struggle getting it to look right with other colors. Thanks for the chance to win this great book. (debbie at wowilikethat dot com)
I struggle with brown. It really is so neutral that it fits fairly well in many things but it just never seems to occur to me as an option.
The color I struggle with the most is brown. I think I could use it with several beiges and creams to make a pretty quilt. Thanks for the chance to enter the drawing.
Grey. Now don’t get me wrong, I love it, but finding the right greys can be a real pain, some are a bit taupe, some too lilac, and forget ordering online for a specific project because they can be hard to capture correctly too. I’m making a quilt for hubby and I’ve had to shelve a few possibles in my quest for great mid greys.
I rarely find that purple goes into my quilts.
I am not a big fan f yellow, but because I love rainbows and color in general, I do use it sometimes. There appear to be some great quilts in this book. I love Every one I’ve seen pictured thus far. Looks like a great book. kathleendotlutzatcomcastdotnet
COMMENT #59
I’m trying to be adventurous and use orange but I just can’t seem to get it right. I would love to have the chance to learn more about how to use orange.
I love this book – it looks like a lot of great info and fun! I see quilts that use white for contrast, and they really appeal to me but I never seem to be able to actually try it in a quilt of mine.
The color I struggle with most is yellow. I love it in theory (sunshine, daffodils, canaries – all delightful), but when it comes to using yellow fabric I just get stuck. A rainbow quilt seems like the best way to carefully ease into yellow without being overwhelming. Thanks for the giveaway!
I have very little brown and orange in my stash, not because I have trouble using them but because they don’t sing to me like other colors. I guess that means I do have trouble using them because I do not have them on hand!
I struggle with orange. I makes me think of Halloween and pumpkins, regardless of where I am trying to use it. I will keep trying …. (or maybe I’ll just use more red and yellow near each other in hopes that their proximity to each other will trick the eye into seeing “orange”. do you think that might work?)
My biggest struggle is with orange — especially if it’s muddy. I used to avoid it as much as possible. More recently I’ve found some nice clear oranges, so I’ve been cautiously adding orange to some of my quilts.
Orange! I don’t know why, but i find very few orange fabrics that i like. I’d love a chance to remedy that with this book! Thanks.
I never feel comfortable working with color, but would like to learn more. This book certainly looks like it is packed with #CreativeGoodness

I tend to have problems with the blues and violets. Seems they all start to clash or blend in too much. Would love to make some projects using this book. Thanks!

I struggle with pink as it’s not really a color I’ve ever “liked” but I can see how great it looks as an accent, especially with colours on the other side of the color wheel (blue greens!) so continue to experiment.
Green is the hardest color for me to get right. There are so many overtones … yellow, blue, red and I can’t seem to find the right one when I want it….especially in the stash!
Brown! Maybe a log cabin quilt lol!
Pink is a color I have a hard time using unless I have a baby girl in need of something.
I struggle most using brown in a quilt. I like bright colors and for my neutrals, I usually use very light colors – white or ecru, so browns rarely make it into one of my quilts. I used to wear lots of brown clothing yeas ago and now I suddenly realize that I don’t have browns in my wardrobe either.
I guess I struggle with yellow, although I do use it here and there.
I struggle with yellow as I just don’t like it. The only time I use it is in rainbow projects 🙂
COMMENT #75
Color I struggle most with is orange – every time I try to use it I change my mind and go with something else.
Orange is my most difficult color to use. Love these quilt patterns as they will help me use orange…a color I am not really fond of!
Love those rainbow especiall rainbow remix!
I really struggle with orange. It is too bright and perky for me. I suppose I’d love it in a citrus color- themed quilt.
