Modern Rainbow Rebecca Bryan

Modern Rainbow – 14 Imaginative Quilts That Play With Color by Rebecca Bryan (published by C&T Publishing Stash Books, 120 pages, $24.95) will be that book that modern quilters turn to for years to come to learn how to hone an understanding of color and how to use color in their quilts. Rebecca starts with The Basics, with an explanation of the Color Spectrum and a guide to help us understand how to sort our fabrics from solids to tone-on-tone and multi-colored prints that is a guide for use in our quilts and how to sort them in our sewing rooms. She writes of contrast, using colors out of order, omitting colors and including other palates in our quilts for an effective use in our quilts.

Rebecca offers a few sources of inspiration from watching color trends to the colors on the selvages of yardage and paint store sample chips (this is fun!) to our favorite blogs/bloggers.

The quilts in the book range from Modern and Modern Traditional to Improvisational and Liberated embracing her love of all quilts and quilting styles. Rebecca says, “I love many types of quilting styles, so the patterns are divided into these categories: modern traditional, modern, and improvisational and liberated. Each of these categories has its own approach to quiltmaking. Be sure to read each section’s introduction for special tips.” She offers the opportunity to look at the box of our own quilting style and see how other styles are informed by that. Because the patterns in the book have such a wide range she has included a wide range of information in the chapter, “Techniques and Sewing Basics” including how to use the 45 degree marks on the ruler and how to piece curved seams.

The quilts range in skill level offering something for every quilter, from the simple log cabin style of Bubbles to the more complicated looking hexagons in Huckleberry.

I struggle with pinks. I’m not really a fan, but I’m in baby quilt making mode so sometimes it is necessary. For baby girl quilts, mostly I’m avoiding pink and opting for other gender neutral or more subtly girly choices.

I have the hardest time with purples… guess mostly because it is not one of my favorite colors! I am SO trying to embrace it more:) I have been trying to sneak in a piece or 2 in my projects lately:) Slowly making friends:) The book look so interesting!!!!

I struggle with using red the most. I really should make a quilts with reds and get over it.

Purple is a color I am not fond of and seldom use. Although I sometimes add a little purple when it’s just what a quilt needs. Recently there seem to be more “pretty” purples available – clearer colors, less lilac tones, and less dingy looking. I think I could use some of those. And of course a rainbow quilt is a perfect way to incorporate all colors — favorite or not.

Love the Wavelength quilt. The color I seem to struggle with is green. I have a lot of it but don’t seem to use it well. I want to make a rainbow quilt so this looks like a great book for me. Thanks!

the thing I want to try is working with low volume fabrics-but I am not sure where to start…I love the low volume quilt that didn’t make it into the book with the rainbow quilting….such a fun idea!

I think I struggle the most with green which is surprising because it is my favorite color. I’d love to make that Huckleberry pattern and then I can sneak some green into that. Thanks for the chance to win!

Yellow because I feel like there aren’t many shades of it like there are of other colors. Trying to get a gradient for a rainbow is very tricky for me.

Bright yellow is hard for me because it seems to grab attention so quickly. I’m planning to match it with dark gray and maybe navy and see how that goes. Thanks for showing so many examples from this book. When I read the title I wasn’t sure it was a great match for me, but now I am certain I could learn a lot from this book.

I love purple but find it difficult to use. I don’t even have much in my stash and it has been my fave since I was small. I think I need to try a range of purples all at once. I tend to like the most vibrant of every color and really neglect the lighter, more subtle hues. Using a range might help ease the color into my projects. Thanks! notwendy gmail

Gold and muddy yellows. I just can’t bring myself to really like those two colors but if I put them with greens and rusts it might work. I just need to convince myself that it’s a pretty Autumn color theme and if nature thinks its perfect then it must be a wonderful color to use.

Grey. Now don’t get me wrong, I love it, but finding the right greys can be a real pain, some are a bit taupe, some too lilac, and forget ordering online for a specific project because they can be hard to capture correctly too. I’m making a quilt for hubby and I’ve had to shelve a few possibles in my quest for great mid greys.

The color I struggle with most is yellow. I love it in theory (sunshine, daffodils, canaries – all delightful), but when it comes to using yellow fabric I just get stuck. A rainbow quilt seems like the best way to carefully ease into yellow without being overwhelming. Thanks for the giveaway!

I have very little brown and orange in my stash, not because I have trouble using them but because they don’t sing to me like other colors. I guess that means I do have trouble using them because I do not have them on hand!

I struggle with orange. I makes me think of Halloween and pumpkins, regardless of where I am trying to use it. I will keep trying …. (or maybe I’ll just use more red and yellow near each other in hopes that their proximity to each other will trick the eye into seeing “orange”. do you think that might work?)

I struggle most using brown in a quilt. I like bright colors and for my neutrals, I usually use very light colors – white or ecru, so browns rarely make it into one of my quilts.
