Mimi's My Little Pony Costume

Junior Editor Mimi Hansen shares her take on seasonal, handcrafted costumes.

By Mimi Hansen

“Aki” in japanese means fall. Akicon is a fall convention held in October for anime fans, like myself. I have been into anime for seven years now and I have been going to Akicon three years. But last year I got into My Little Pony when I discovered the newest My Little Pony series, Friendship Is Magic.

Even as a child, I had never watched the older MLP episodes, but once I saw the newest season, I fell in love. The art style was refined and cute, and it was genuinely funny, and not in the “It’s so dumb it’s funny” way, more like the  “Oh my gawsh, it’s cute and creative and clever” kind of way. At the end of Season 1 all the ponies go to the Grand Galloping Gala, where Pinkie Pie wears a cutesy candy-covered ball gown.

Now seeing as they are ponies, I had to change of the design a bit to fit a Homo Sapien, like myself. But in the end it was a complete hit when i wore it to Akicon. I even had professional photographers take my picture (they all had HUGE cameras).  It was kinda scary having so many people take my photo, but also fun, because it meant my costume was well-made enough and that I pulled it off.

I hand-make all my costumes, so having people be impressed must mean my sewing skills have improved greatly. I hate looking at my older dresses now… xD

My dream job is to design dresses and costumes for fantasy or historical films, so designing costumes for conventions is like testing the waters for my dream job.

My daughter and son are into Anime. When we went to Dragoncon this year, mom made/helped with Blue Exorcist costumes for the pair of them. But next year we are going as Steampunk Disney (see FB page). That mean 2 bustled skirts for daughter and I. Daughter will gender bend Hades from Hercules, son Vinny from Atlantis (I will be making a metal hand for that!) and me, well Yzma from Emperor’s New Groove. I’ve gotten to design costumes for Mulan and a number of other plays and ballets but saddly these were local groups and no money but alot of satifaction!
