It’s a rare occasion that we get to review quilty fiction because it doesn’t often come our way. There is some really good quilty fiction out there, including Earlene Fowler’s Benni Harper Mysteries, Marie Bostwick’s Cobbled Court Series and Jennifer Chiaverini’s Elm Creek Quilters and sew many more.

From Here to Home is one of those, “make a quilt fort, grab a cup or glass of, and read for 3 days straight because you just can’t put it down” kind of books. Marie revisits Mary Dell Templeton and her family from Between Heaven and Texas. Mary Dell has a career as a national quilt teacher, quilt shop owner, quilt television show host, and matriarch of her family from Too Much, Texas. Quilt TV show host, you say? Why, yes! She and her son Howard (who has Downs Syndrome, and way better color sense than his mama) co-host Quintessential Quilting.

We see this family and friends deal with real life family situations that happen every single day. PTSD, job loss, family estrangement, deep hurt and deep joy. For example, the new network execs are making changes that stand to negatively effect not only Mary Dell and Howard, but the rest of her family and the employees in her quilt shop and town. Okay, this is just a plot line, but author Marie has a great ability to make all of these seemingly disparate fabrics and threads into beautifully quilted story–and to make it feel real.

Oh and we can’t forget the horse, the goat and Holly Whitaker, Mary Dell’s new co-host (spoiler alert! spoiler alert!); and Rob Lee (Mary Dell’s nephew who suffers with PTSD).  And, well, this part of the story just might make your eyes water a little, which is really hard to explain on one’s commuter bus. *look away, there’s nothing to see here*

From Here to Home will have you cheering for the good stuff, worried about the challenging stuff, annoyed (rightly) with a couple of the characters and surprised at how everything works out. And everything does work out. Holly learns…, Howard goes to…, Mary Dell gets…. Just go pick up a copy and start reading.

Well done, Marie, well done.

Quilt. Sew. Live. Breathe.
