Dazzle: Quilts, jewelry and a great cause!

Okay people break out your checkbooks and your WiFi, because you’re gonna be surfing to this site for today’s Dazzle!

Kate Clayton of Cameron, Missouri, has an Etsy shop called The Adopt Shoppe where the proceeds from all of her handmade jewelry items are used to pay for the upcoming adoption of their new baby from Taiwan.

Kate and husband Jason have two biological children: Madison, 8, and Mason, 6. And last year they adopted Mia, now 20 months old, from a private missionary adoption program in Taiwan. Now they’re waiting for the call that will come any day now from the same organization for their next little son or daughter.

And what, you say, does this have to do with quilting? Well, Kate is a quilter. And so is her mom, who is a longarmer. Much of Kate’s jewelry, (Scrabble tiles with quotes, images or photos that are coated with resin) are adoption- and Bible verse-themed. But there are also many that have quotes relevant to us stitchy types. (Of course for some of us, all of her quotes might be relevant.)

There’s a definition of quilt, a sewing machine image and our personal fave, “Keep Calm and Quilt On” for those of us wanting to channel our inner Queen Elizabeth at the sewing machine.

The big question is has it worked? “It started small, but I’ve actually expanded quite a bit,” Kate says. “And it’s just for trying to raise money for that adoption.”

“Yes. It is working. I’ve done really well,” says Kate, who stays up late every night, or works during her kids’ naptimes to make her products.

Now, she did promise us a pic of her and her brood, but it didn’t come in time, and we didn’t feel good about pushing this busy lady to hurry up. So, because Kate has told us that she’ll let us know when the call comes, we’ll take that opportunity to post her family pic then as well.

Her charms are $12. Kate also makes bracelets, from leather, beads, cord and, get this, braided strips of quilt fabrics with cute charms attached. Nothing is more than $20. And she also does custom work, which means you can have your precious ones on a Scrabble charm. Check it out here.
