Welcome to today’s stop on Victoria Findlay Wolfe’s 15 Minutes of Play — Improvisational Quilts Blog Tour! We were so excited to be asked by Victoria to be a part of this tour, and we gladly share with you this amazing book.
Take time to play. Make the time. Carve out 15 minutes a day. These are the concepts that make up Victoria’s emphasis in this book. This book is heavy on the inspiration angle and light on the Quilt Police angle to be sure. You really do need 15 Minutes of Play just for the freedom it offers alone.
Two of us were able to get that time carved out of our crazy holiday and production schedules to share a little of our playtime with you!

Megan's Playtime!
Victoria’s book came along at just the right time for me because I have been lamenting how little sewing I’ve done over the last few months. Being Creative Director of Generation Q is challenging and rewarding, but the very activity that led me to this position has taken a far backseat to Photoshop and InDesign. In her book, Victoria talks about being a new mother and having very little time for her art, and how she set aside 15 minutes each day for creativity. Fifteen minutes seems like such a small amount when we are used to having hours at our disposal, but when I read that, I realized that taking on this role here at GenQ is much like the days when I had a newborn to care for, and back then, I would have benefited so much if I had found a way to pull out 15 minutes a day of creative play time. Even though my job is a creative one, I find that it’s a very different kind of creativity than that which I use to create quilts. At the same time, Victoria’s improvisational methods are even farther from the type of work I do every day, and so I was anxious to carve out my 15 minutes and have some playtime.
I decided to stick with a limited color palette of purple and orange, since I’ve recently been obsessed with that color combination but haven’t had a chance to play much with it. I grabbed several scraps from my scrap boxes and sat at the machine, sewing on bits and hacking off other bits, only letting myself briefly consider what would go where. Once I had a good size piece, I took my 6.5-inch square ruler and laid it down at random and trimmed my block. I think that next time, I would pay more attention to where I place the ruler so as not to lose some of the smaller bits in the seam allowance, but otherwise I’m very please with my result and I hope to continue the process until I have a collection of these blocks that I can use in a larger project.

Scott got a little carried away with more than 15 minutes worth of play.
Oh I was all over this book when I saw it. I met Victoria at Spring Quilt Market a few years back, but I hadn’t heard of her before. When I got home from that Market, I went to her blog and needless to say we are great friends now for we just think so much alike when it comes to color and fabric play! I have always been a big fan of using up scraps and have done so in many ways over the years. For this blog tour I decided to snag some of the scraps off my cutting table and make up some “playtime” fabric as Victoria does in this book. Some of these I actually had started before I even read her book! I have a small little project planned out for my own blog‘s stop on this Tour coming up on December 6th. So you can see what I manage to “do” with the play time results there as well as enter to win a copy of the book again.
I think my favorite part of Victoria’s book, besides all the stunning visual inspiration, would be the storyline behind her path into quilting via her grandmother’s style. This style of “crazy” quilting is nothing new, but every generation has a new twist on it making it fresh and “new”. That’s something we firmly believe around here. “Modern” quilting and “Traditional” quilting are Sisters of the same Mother and though there is a bit of quibbling and times between the two, Sisters they will always be.

I like Victoria´s work and try make fabric as she learn me. But still I prefer scraps strings, I cut 2″ string which I use in quilts, thiner I also use. I try to use whole piece of fabric, does not depend on size.

My daughter loves to pull scraps of fabric out of my various boxes and play with them. Sometimes I’ll have her put stuff together on a sheet of paper, cover it with plastic wrap, the scan it into my computer. I’ll use that scan to try to re-create her “block” using actual sewing instead of her preferred tape. Of course, she’s pestering me to start letting her use the machine, so soon I’ll just be able to let her make her own blocks.

I’ve got a machine set up in the room with my fabric. I have bins with all my scraps in …separated by colors. I pull scraps from one color & sew them randomly together until I get a piece of “fabric” big enough to square up to 12 1/2″. Each time I set down to sew I pull from another color. When I have enough to make a king quilt, I’llsew them together for a “rainbow of scraps” quilt. This is my 15 min of sewing method….although it’s more like 30min!

I grab a stack of fabrics – often fat quarters – from a favorite collection. Then I see what else I have in my stash that might want to play along. I add and subtract until I have a palette that excites me. Sometimes I already have a pattern in mind, or sometimes I let the stack tell me what it wants to be. I often alter the pattern to suit my tastes. Then it’s off to the cutting table we go!

I would love this book! There are days when I am unable to sew due to health problems however it does not keep me from playing with my fabric. I will sit down with a stack of fabric and fold & unfold, organize by color & basically just touch the fabric feeling its smooth texture in my hands. Very therapeutic. I have been following Victoria’s blog 15 Minutes of Play. I love what she is able to accomplish with bits and pieces of scraps. Amazing. I have not played with the 15 minute philosophy but someday want to. I am afraid my playing with fabric thus far has been pretty structured…. My favorite way to play with fabric, and one of my very favorite parts of quilting, is to pull fabric out and pile it on the floor. I don’t censor, I don’t question, I just reach for what feels right. Later on there is a lot of editing, but the editing is hard and rich because so much treasure has been pulled out and tossed into piles of fabric.

When I see a pattern, block or quilt I am interested in I run to my stash and start pulling out fabrics until I find the ones I want to use and then get to arranging, cutting and sewing.

Fave way to play? Hard to say; there are so many! One of my go-to’s when I have just a few minutes, but an urge to MAKE something, gosh-darnit, is to make a wonky log cabin. Just go round and round til I have to stop (the pasta is boiling over, the kids are fighting, the phone rings, etc.), then I can pick it up again later. Good start for lots of other projects. And satisfying!

I love this book…it looks like such fun! I have actually been doing the 15 minute thing on my blog with a “just for me” project. Somehow the “just for me’s” get lost in the deadlines and I starting giving myself 15 minutes a day for a project of Bonnie Hunter’s I’ve been wanting to do. Sometimes I get a bit hung up on “getting it right” with quilt blocks, so I step back and work on a quilt that is “blind auditions. My 5 yr old son helps to blindly pull a scrap out of the brown bag, and THAT is my next piece. Kinda drives me nuts that I don’t have control of it. And I have to admit, some blocks went from scrappy to crappy, but I still used them, and they blended right in 🙂

My favorite way to play with fabric is making an art quilt. Earlier this year i finished a cake/cupcake quilt for my daughter, and that was very satisfying.

My favorite way to play with fabric is to pick a color scheme and pull out all the FQ’s (folded into 5″x5″ squares) or stacks in that color scheme from my stash and try to decide what sort of quilt I would make with it. Unfortunately, this leaves fabric all over my sewing room and doesn’t actually make any progress on a quilt. Victoria’s approach might be a solution!

I generally start pulling fabrics for a project by selecting a “focus fabric” that has lots of colors in it, and then start yanking pieces from my stash to see how it works…. it’s very comical that generally, when the dust settles and the fabrics stop flying, I am a million miles from where I started and the vision has evolved into something much more tangible!

What a good question to ask us! My favorite way is to take a pile of small scraps and strips, straighten the edges and sew them into groups. I like working in all shades of one color. Then I’ll add another color to make a quilt that is both liberated and traditional in style. Also love Gwen Marston’s liberated blocks, and I’ve done some of Victoria’s “making fabric”. Her book is the inspiration that I’m looking for to work more in V’s style.
