Saturday Special: The Color Edition

Happy Saturday, Q-bies!
Our little tidbits today are all about color, both for your eyes and your brain.

Quilt Pick of the Week
The stunner pictured above is by Austin-based Heather of Fiberosity, and it caught GenQ editor (and Bitchy Stitcher) Megan Dougherty’s eye because she often struggles with trying not to use a single line of fabric in her quilts. Here’s a good example, she says, of why that struggle is sometimes just worth giving in to.
“I am often pressed for time, and I have lots of gift quilts to make, and so a set of pre-cuts, already coordinated, makes my life so much easier, even if I didn’t have the pleasure of pulling together odd bits out of my stash and from my LQS,” says Megan. “But this quilt shows just how stunning a set of fabrics from one designer line can look. Heather used Central Park by Kate Spain for Moda (and she got points just for that because I adore Kate Spain and and am currently working with her new line, Terrain). I love how the colors flow across the quilt, but even more, I love that she chose to use the prints for the smaller pieces of her blocks, set off by larger blocks in a solid of Kona Coal. Sometimes we hate to cut into those gorgeous prints, but doing so can yield awesome results.”
Blog Pick of the Week
Color ain’t easy. Take it from GenQ editor Jake Finch, who also teaches new quilting students.
“Hands down, the thing they say is the hardest for them to master (in their opinion) is color. And I can understand why. For anyone working in a visual medium, color is the core of design,” Jake says.

That’s why she’s jumping crazy with joy ever since she learned about Joen Wolfrom’s new blog, Playing With Color. For years, Jake has used Joen’s 3-in-1 Color Tool and devoured all of her books on color. (The most recent is Visual Coloring: A Foolproof Approach to Color-Rich Quilts with C&T Publishing.)

“I can honestly say that I’m much more comfortable when I work with color because of her work,” Jake says.

Joen’s new blog, Playing with Color  features twice weekly postings. The first post of the week features a color concept. The second post has exercises to apply the concepts. Only up since July, the blog is already loaded with a ton of information and some gorgeous pics. Sign up for the email subscription and get her posts as they go up.

“I promise you’ll learn some neat tricks for using color in your designs,” says Jake.
