Saturday Special: Raindrops on Quilts and Cozy Flannels

I am not, not not sitting around feeling sorry for myself while my compatriots are off in Houston living it up and hobnobbing with the hot names in the quilt biz. Nope, I’ve been inspired by our recent visit with Emily Cier, author of Scrap Republic (my very own copy of which just arrived on my doorstep—yay!) and have been organizing all my scraps by color. I did this by convincing my children that we were playing a “color game” and after dumping several boxes of scraps in the middle of the floor, challenged them to separate them in to piles of pink, red, yellow, etc. They totally went for it! Now if I could just convince them that de-stringing the floor under my sewing machine is a game, I’d be all set!

Quilt of the Week

I discovered this beauty on Flickr this week, and I’ve been fascinated by it since I have only just recently mastered curved piecing. This quilt was posted by Peppermint Pinwheels and the only identifying info she gives is that it is from the East Bay Modern Quilt Guild and is “Dan’s raindrop quilt.” If anybody knows Dan, tell him to give us a holler as we’d love to properly credit this gorgeous quilt. I am always struck by quilts that take traditional blocks and re-imagine them in a way that makes them seem entirely new, and that’s what Dan has done here with traditional Drunkard’s Path elements.

Update: Two alert readers have identified this as Dan Rouse’s “Ripple’ quilt. Go here to see Dan’s blog post about its completion.

Blog Post of the Week

Scott says his favorite post this week has been from Anna Maria Horner.  Says Scott: “Okay, maybe it’s because we haven’t turned the heaters on yet, or maybe its because the thought of how buttery soft and ‘non-pilly’ those Free Spirit flannels are, but this has got to be my pick for the week. That Anna Maria has got the most beautiful eye.  Incredible designs here, and beautiful shots of the flannel in action.  And I thought the timing of having this be blog post of the week during the big hoorahrah in Houston this week at Quilt Market just made sense..

“Or maybe it’s because I have barely touched the Loulouthi print cottons and voiles I have from this spring yet, and these are all variations and takeoffs from there. I dunno…I think I need them though…and I need to get to playing with the fabric here at hand as well!”

Megan, You’re doing an amazing job of holding down the q-fort! Dan’s quilt is beautiful and intriguing. We’ve been talking you and Scott up here at Market and everyone wishes you were both here, too. Next Spring: KC! P.S. Send the girls to my house.
