Now here are some birds of a different, ahem, feather. (You expected that, didn’t you?) Our dear friend and Q-bie Rose Hughes created these great plushie ravens for our June-July 2013 issue now available in shops and on newsstands, but we bet you didn’t know the significance the raven holds for Rose. The raven is her totem. They started showing up in her quilts in 1996, partly because of all the traveling she was doing in the Pacific Northwest. Read on for the full scoop.
Rose’s middle name is Brenna, which translated from the original Celtic actually means “raven.” When she started researching the symbology of ravens, she learned that in mythology, the raven is the creator and the trickster, a troublemaker that pushes boundaries.
“Those are all things that describe me,” she says. “I’m creative and I can get into trouble. I like to push people to try different things.”
And now we’re pushing you (but ever so sweetly). Check out the issue, and the pattern (get the downloadable pattern here) and make a little feathered trouble of your own. Have fun!

Very cute. I downloaded the pattern and have now added it to my list….uh, it’s a long list so don’t hold your breath! But my house needs one! So on the list it goes! Thanks for sharing. (Oh and I got my Gen Q issue today! So that is higher up on the list than the raven plushie – sorry! -but….Duh!)
