Happy New Year! We’re Celebrating YOU Today!

by jake on January 1, 2015

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

How happy are we to welcome 2015? Thrilled would be the word! And we’re even happier to be sharing this New Year with you!

We need to thank you, each of you, because you are the reason we are here. When we (Melissa and Jake) contemplated launching a magazine of our own, we knew what we didn’t want it to be (a running sales pitch filled with flat patterns) and what we did want it to be (a place of community and inspiration where we could learn, play and support each other in our creative addiction). While there’s always room for improvement, we believe that we’re holding steady to our vision. And this year we intend to take this vision up several notches, all the better to serve your needs, Q-bies!

So, to that end, we want to make a couple of announcements. (Fanfare keys in background.)

FIRST: We’ve reached 10,000 likes on our Facebook page! Why is this so important? Because Facebook–for better or worse–remains the most effective way for us to spread the word about what we are doing. And it was through Facebook that we aggressively sought out our fellow Addicted Stitchers and recruited them to the our stitchy brand of fun. We won’t ignore this moment. It’s too wonderful! So we’re hosting our first giveaway for 2015. See below this gorgeous HUGE tote bag courtesy of C&T Publishing.

This stunning Keeper of All Fun, featuring a delightful Double Wedding Ring quilt made by Victoria Findlay Wolfe and quilted by Debby Brown (we love you BOTH!), contains more STUFF than we could even shoot a picture of! But, we’ve given it our best try. Witness the moment:

This pictures shows a little more than half the goodies we neatly shoved into this hardworking bag. Oh, and it will include a year’s subscription to Generation Q Magazine. If you already have a subscription, we’ll either extend it a year or you can gift it to your fave stitching bud. We’re guessing the bag’s contents are worth close to $1,000. Really.

So, here’s the deal: In the comments below, we want to know three things.

  1. What do you like best about GenQ? (Print, website, or any other way in which we interact…)
  2. What could we do better or add to our line-up? (And please don’t tell us about getting our stuff posted to the website sooner? That’s our NUMBER ONE RESOLUTION for 2015!!)
  3. What best inspires you to create? This is a very broad question, we know, but the answer is all yours to have fun with!

When you post your comment, PLEASE make sure we have your COMPLETE NAME AND EMAIL ADDRESS. This information is hidden from the post itself, but it gives us the means to contact you, which is no little thing.

On the evening of Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, we’ll select one winner for the bag above at random and 10 additional winners of some fun GenQ stuff (Swatchbuddies, pins and a copy of our very first issue which was never sold on the newsstands). All three questions must be answered and winners who do not step up within one week after being notified will be passed up for someone new.

SECOND: Now this is even bigger. This coming week we will launch the ALL NEW GENERATION Q WEBSITE!! That’s right!! We are growing up. We’ve brought on one of the best Web Goddesses, Sarah Bailey of SpunMonkey, to help us grow up. She’s been working hard to transform our vision of a functional, playful, content-rich and sassy website into The Real Deal. All of our existing content will be relocated to the new one (the web address stays the same) but we’ll have it better organized and easier to navigate. We’re spending this weekend working on fine-tuning the content and plan to launch sometime on Tuesday with the announcement of the Keeper of All Fun bag. Stayed tuned to Facebook, Twitter and other channels to learn about the launch.

THIRD: We’re on Instagram and Pinterest and are actively posting to both. Come check us out at INSTAGRAM HERE and PINTEREST HEREWe’ll be posting lots of fun stuff at both sites as well as our usual at Facebook and Twitter.

LASTLY: Sometime this year we WILL begin offering GenQ’s print magazine in a digital version. This has been on our wish list since the beginning but up until now, the know-how has been absent. Thanks to Lisa Lauch, our amazing Creative Director, we will finally be able to do this. More information will come, but we’re aiming for the summer.

So again, thank you, thank you, thank you for all that you do, and have done, for us! Honestly, the last year has been very hard on our small staff. We’ve been overwhelmed by too many family emergencies to count. Through it all, you have been patient, supportive and kind. We can’t thank you enough for the prayers, notes, messages, gifts of grace and more that you’ve showered us with. The best we can do is make this year even better for each of you! Happy New Year to us all! May 2015 be the Best. Year. Ever!

Many quilted hugs,

Melissa, Jake, Lisa, Scott, Tracy, Teri, Michelle, Leslie and Stashy Galore (AKA Beverly)

first of all congrats. I love to hold a mag and next I like FB posts but my New Years Resolution is to spend less time on FB and more time sewing. Not sure what you could do better and will be interested to see the new grown up GenQ. I get inspired by seeing completed projects, hence all the time spent on FB. Again…congrats.

1.i found gen Q on a magazine stand. I was drawn to the articles about quilters who are working inside the quilting world. I love the articles that are not typical to quilting. Such as the table of elements in quilting. Even though the magazine is about $10. I certainly nabbed that one. I am trying not to have magazines in my life to clutter my rooms up so digital will be enticing me to include it in my budget.

2i would like to see more articles where people are successful quilters as a second occupation. I love quilting but I have 2 jobs and I want to carve out more quilting time. I would love to make quilting my second job but have been unsuccessful at getting anything sold to substitute this for job #2. Anything I could read would help me get more confidence to sell my creations. I would also like to see an article om copyrights and quilting.

3. I am most inspired to create quilts for special events. Knowing that the quilt commemorates an event really gets my sewing engine revved and the project completed in no time at all.

Thanks for asking for my opinion

Yvonne Wilson

That’s such good news about going digital. I like web-based information–it can be up-to-date and updated. It can be downloaded instantly. What inspires me is good design, especially modern interpretation of traditional. (Not contorted, “look at how different I am.” I admire designs that honor craft, not quick.

1. I like the print version. I’m old fashioned…and yeah, old. I also like your fresh attitudes.
2. Much as I love your projects, I’ve found some errors in the instructions and want to encourage you to proof future projects better. (Admittedly I’m picky: as I’m a technical editor, it’s an occupational thing.)
3. I can’t not create. It’s like breathing.

1. Love the compact size, easy to put in a purse so I have reading material on work breaks.
2. More articles by quilters on quilters and what makes them quilt their style. I love all the diversity of the quilting world.
3. The inner peace I feel inside. It takes me away from the stress of my world.

1. I like the fresh and fun content. It’s a nice change from the “same old” quilt magazine.
2. I would love to see more reader feedback. I find it very interesting. Yep, I’m weird that way.
3. Everything inspires me to create. It could be anything from a dream, a piece of trash on the ground, a discussion with a friend about excess boobage that spills out of your bra, or a means to escape cleaning the bathroom. Actually just being alive inspires me.

1. I think the magazine is one of the most fun and fresh quilting magazines out there. And Jake and Melissa really keep the Facebook page current and fun.
2. I would love something that helps inspire me to create my own designs. I’d love to see a feature where a designer walks is through the inspiration through design process from start to finish. I’d love to see it every month. Different designer every month?
3. Exciting fabric, a great color scheme, and a really cute pattern inspire me to create. I wish I could branch outside of the pattern more.

Happy new year and congrats on your successes!

3. I am inspired to create when there is a need for a gift. 1) The thing I like best about Gen Q is that I feel like you are talking TO me, not just at me or near me.
2) I would love to see an article about how different quilters approach doing challenge quilts. Other than that, I can’t think of anything you could do better or in addition to what you’re already doing.
3) Inspiration comes to me in lots of different ways – seeing what others have done/are doing, architectural patterns, tile work, photographs, nature. Pretty much anything I can see might inspire me at any time!

Happy New Year to all y’all at Gen Q!

1. The handy size. Inspiring articles and pictures.
2. More articles about people who quilt as a hobby, not as a source of income, who create wonderful quilts in their spare time.
3. A piece of fabric. A photograph. Workshops that teach a new tool or method without asking me to make the same quilt as everyone else in the class. Show and tell at a guild meeting.

I just found your mag in October while visiting family in Seattle – I live in Ohio. Picked up two issues there and found the most recent at Barnes and Noble – the last one I might add. Love the size of your magazine; even liked that you printed a letter discussing inclusion of alcohol! More articles for home quilters – or tips – since I can’t afford a longarm – would be helpful. As for inspiration – I think you are what I’ve been looking for. There doesn’t seem to be anyone else in the market who present themselves in such a friendly and informative manner. Good luck with your new website and Happy New Year.

1.) Everything! :) I’ve loved GenQ from the moment I first picked one up, because when you read it feels like you’re talking to a fun friend. There are drink recipes in a quilting magazine…what?! Besides having great tips and showing new products and techniques for quilting, you also have amazing articles that I can’t read anywhere else, like talking to costume designers or cool chicks who make rock/metal quilts. Seriously, I love this magazine.

2.) I wish I had some great advice, but I really don’t think you need to change a thing. Personally I’m a big English paper piecing fan, so I’d love any articles/tips you want to write about that. But I love everything you’re doing!

3.) Honestly, the fabrics are my inspiration. I can see a great fabric that I never thought I needed and suddenly projects come springing to mind. This is why I have tons of fabric and UFOs in my sewing room. :)

First so excited about you going digital, I love your printed magazine so pretty, but I do better with digital, easier for me to find and to make patterns that I want. Second, again so excited that you will have a new website, I am interested in seeing if it is better to navigate, maybe with pictures of what your current/next issue holds, so then I know what is coming. Third: Pictures, beautiful pictures, people using their stash and not having to go out and buy the latest and newest fabric line. I look forward to the new improvements you are making for 2015.

Congrats to Gen Q!!!

1. I love the unique look and content of Gen Q. It’s one of the few quilting magazines I will keep current in 2015. I get too many and some have to go. NOT Gen Q!!!

2. I think it might be fun to have a project series which spreads out over several months. Sort of like a block of the month but not for a full year. Maybe like a 3 issue project, give enough steps in each issue to keep us busy until the next.

3. I see inspiration everywhere, magazines, quilt shows, blogs, other quilters. I never run out of ideas. I only hope I am blessed with enough years in my life to make a dent in my pile of ideas.

1). I love the fresh outlook on quilting and how you are taking the basics of quilt making and making them fresh and new. I am probably not your target demographic (age 52 and quilting for about 25 years) but I just love what you are doing!!!!
2). Can’t think of anything you could do better except maybe get this new generation of quilters turned on to a neutral other than grey……
3). What best inspires me to create? I have a very structured job as a middle school mathematics teacher. I love it but I also need an outlet for the artistic and creative side of me! That side gets neglected sometimes and then I go in my craft room, close the door away from the world, and just create. I am into hand dyeing right now and am about to start on my wedding quilt, a Mariners Compass center (for our beach wedding and the fact that we keep each other going in the direction that we should go) surrounded by Log Cabin blocks (for our love of home; each block center square will have an appliquéd heart in our wedding colors). All of the blocks will be created from my hand dyed fabrics so the overall look will be rainbowy……which fits us well, if you get my meaning! I can’t wait to start this one and then take the scraps and create from there!!!!

Dear Terri: Our “target” audience is the modern AND contemporary quilter and sewist. There is no age defined there, and our staff reflects ALL ages. I’m 47 and have been sewing since I was 20. So that makes us similar in age and skill. But the love of stitching is what makes us all brothers and sisters of the cloth! So yes, you ARE our target audience! Thank you for your kind words!!

What I like that you already do is to include projects that are not always quilting projects, but sewing also. I like the size of the magazine. What you could do better? Maybe include a section on quilt guilds or quilt groups (it was hard to come up with something!) What inspires me- are colors and fabric.

I like Generation Q because it focuses on modern quilting.
I think that when you pay $10 for a magazine there should be no OOPs. I would think that you have proofreaders and also numerous testers to make sure the pattern is correct. I know you post the revisions but that can be after the fact that someone bought fabric and cut everything out – I know. Other than that, I love it. I would also like to see some free patterns to try on the website.
Pictures of beautiful quilts inspire me to make the quilt. I also like to see comments when someone did make the quilt – what they would do differently or that it was easy/challenging but worth it etc.
Thanks for the great magazine. Keep up the good work.

1. I really like the size of the mag, it’s perfect for throwing in my purse or diaper bag. I like your FB style also, I like when you post things that are kind of off beat, and that it’s obviously real people posting- not just an employee under the company name.
2.Im not sure what to tell you to do differently, I like things how they are. I’m exited about the changes you mentioned with the website though.
3. I like seeing quilts in their “natural habitat”. Like a quilt hung over a window on a Walking Dead rerun the other day, or in the backround of a movie or picture. Seeing stuff as it would be used lets me step back and see it from an easier, less critical standpoint. Sometimes I get too hung up on the little details of sewing, and it paralyzes my creativity.

1. I love that the articles are INTERESTING – so much so that I actually read the magazine from cover to cover, which I never do with other magazines.

2. I’d love to see occasional articles where well known quilters show the progression of their quilting from the beginning. Include successes and some of the not-so-good work. There are so many quilters who are just starting out and who feel they “can’t measure up.” If they were to see that every great quilter had to start somewhere and maybe didn’t always create the stuff they do “now,” it may help build newbie confidence.

3. I’m inspired by other creative people, and by bright and beautiful COLOR! Being able to work with cheerful-colored fabric makes me happy. I also love finishing a project! Not that it happens often, but when it does the feeling is amazing. Accomplishment = HAPPY!

Hi Brandy: Thank you for your thoughts. I wanted to let you know that in almost every issue we have a piece called “My First.” This article features a well-known quilter with his or her first and latest quilt. Usually it’s in the back of the book. I will also tell you that when I teach, I always bring my first quilt with me to show off. It’s called the Beast. It’s about 30 pounds, denim and calico, button tied, poly sheet on the back, comforter batting inside and is king-sized. It’s falling apart, of course, but I still love Beast. EVERY quilter started somewhere and made many mistakes along the way. Keep on stitching, Girl!

2. What I would like more of would be the “behind the scenes” — quilters talking about their inspiration, the design process, how the chose what, how they deal with problems and mistakes, etc.
3. What I am inspired by is color and fabric; seeing diferent colors together, and the moods it evokes!

Thank you! I’ve enjoyed reading over these comments, too!

2. Don’t tweet or use instagram but use Facebook and Pinterest…again old school….can’t understand Twitter with all the hashtags…have no idea what they are talking about….geeshhhhh old or what…..and Instagram have no idea what it is or what you use it for…..
3. I am inspired by nature….Love the colors of spring as everything is coming back to life…the flowers and the trees….the birds are back….and the colors of fall as the leaves are changing colors , the reds, the yellows, the oranges before they die off the trees….

Wow! I admire your ambition and I appreciate all the work that goes into Generation Q.
1. I love the content and I appreciate your philosophy about no quilt bullies! And aside from the great content, I also like the dimensions of the magazine. It’s an easy size for reading and sticking in a purse to take places.
2. I really enjoy articles about art quilting techniques and fabric manipulation, and would love to see more of those.
3. I get inspired to create by thinking about whoever I am creating for, and what would make that person happy.
Thanks for the awesome giveaway, and congratulations on your milestone!

Finally there is a community where quilting art has expanded beyond tradition, while being rooted in tradition. Being GenQ, the resulting expression of quilting has been edgy, modern, somewhat raw and completely inspiring! That’s what I love best about GenQ. Expansive expression!! You are already on your path of doing better; from start up to growing pains of marketing, economic prosperity, marketing and shows! Trudge ahead, as the definition of trudge is to “walk upright with purpose”. My inspiration to create comes from my surroundings; from what I see in quilting, to everyday life patterns and colors just waiting for interpretation in cloth! I’m on my way, my own baby steps, but the encouragement from quilting communities as you have provided have given me room to learn and trudge my own way. Thank you for your hard work!

Wow! Great giveaway! OK, in order, the answers are (1) The one thing I really like about GenQ that is different from other magazines is the size. It’s so much more compact, yet stuffed full of wonderful things! (2) I honestly can’t think of anything you could do better! and (3) For me, giving away quilty hugs is what inspires me to create. I got bored when I was only making things for myself, but when I started making things for people who were in need of a hug, the creative juices just started flowing like mad! Now I’m joined with a whole crew of creative women and men who add to all the quilty hugs we give away – we’ve given away over 1000 quilts in five years!

1. The clear voice of this magazine gives it a real “personality.” I particularly like that there are so many articles included beyond quilt patterns.
2. I enjoy hearing about how designers work through their process from start to finish. Perhaps in one or two Playdates per issue the designer could write about the process behind creating the design. (Inspiration, rough sketches, color schemes, fabric choices, quilting design options, finishing choices)
3. My greatest inspirations come from the world around me. I look to art, architecture, nature, history, and textiles to inform my work.

First, let me just say that I LOVE the magazine! I love that it stays true to the name — its quilting for a new generation! There is never the dull same ole same ole, that you find in other quilt mags. I can guy this one and be assured that I will always enjoy it and never feel that I didn’t get my money’s worth. So that answers what I like best about it, but, being fair, can I also just point out that the people who run the mag are AWESOME?! Just saying’…

What could you do better….. hmm, thats a toughie. Well, one – don’t listen to trolls. Whoever that was who said they didn’t like the alcoholic drinks needs to go back to her rocking chair and stfu… just saying’… we love those parts of the mag that make it “real”, don’t listen to others and bend to their wills. So what can you do better – stand up for those of us who love you and support you and pay no mind to the trolls. Haters gonna hate!

What best inspires me…. ok this is shallow, I fully admit it… but ya need to hook me with a great pic. So pay special attention to the cover and to the pics on the first pages of the articles, because thats what hooks us and excites us the most. Its shallow, we know it – but its honest.

Love you all and love the mag — its only up from here!!!!!

GenQ is the only magazine I read cover to cover-even the ads. I like that you throw in articles that have nothing to do with quilting like the drink recipes. Wait, maybe those do go with quilting.
When you stop growing and changing you become stagnant so there is always room for improvement. Sounds like you and the rest of your staff are on the right track. It would be nice to receive the mags in the mail a little more timely.
I am inspired by beautiful fabrics, interesting layouts, patterns and colors in my everyday travels. I like to look at a pattern or design and figure out how it was done then tweak it somewhat to make it my own.

Second show us a new tool or new block or new technique or new way to do the “old” stuff each month, online so we can have it easily available. Third inspiration can be seeing a Pinterest board full of ideas, a walk outside, a bird feeder, a flower show is amazing. I am finally meeting you, the real you this a.m. Your photo of the snowkisses blowing my way in the red background Happy New Year photo grabbed me and your writing style nabbed me and it looks like this contest for the Keeper of All Fun is trying hard to reel me in! I know I have browsed the site in the past, may even have purchased a magazine somewhere along the way—but I think we are going to be fine friends and bed fellows from here on. So here goes my comments for the contest….forgive me if it is lengthy —-I am “in crush” with you! LOL:
1) I think I am going to love the width and breadth and depth of your archives –the equivalent of an attic window seat filled with old treasured magazines and a comfy cushion and a few quilts and the time to browse away. The light in the window will be the sun shining in to see me hard put to decide which technique to try for which quilt (By the way, I am taking on making 7 quilts for a family whose home burned on the 30th, so looking for fun, fast inspired project ideas ). I do believe I am now fully appreciating digital storage rather than all of my years of print accumulation –I will be judiciously purchasing print copies of the magazine!
2)I am still exploring, so really just keep up what you are doing at the moment —the archives are essential. Keep them current as you go. Continue the friendly, open, welcome to my vision attitude –I will keep coming back –and I hate to say what that could mean to my limited budget!
3)As for inspiring me to create –usually a challenge of some sort –be it a slow month for my friends’ shop or a fund raiser for a favorite charity or just this week a family of 7 (Mom, Dad, and five kids under 18 at home) who barely got out of the fire that destroyed their home (Dad was home recovering from an illness, Mom was at work ). So what started as a I’ll make one quilt has evolved into doing each of the kids a quilt –and hey, Mom and Dad could use some comforting too..so now I go to my storage units and see what fabrics I have on hand while I wait to hear from the family what each of them would like their own personal blankie to be! (Dare I pray they don’t want Minkie??? Whole other experience that was!) My last bit of originality was a quilt out of Christmas Fabrics from Timeless Treasures….I am still writing the pattern and will be using the quilting frame at the shop, but most of the collection sold after people saw what I had come up with and they started visualizing the fabrics in their own projects. So Challenges of one sort or another are my inspiration.

#1. I like reading your magazine for all of the information in it and in the style it is delivered. It is not stuffy and I appreciate that. I still like holding a magazine in my hands.
#2. More tips are always appreciated and I really enjoy your little surveys. The block builder articles don’t interest me at all. Your references to alcohol aren’t necessary and in fairness I don’t care for food recipes in other quilt magazines either. That is what homemaking/cooking magazines are for. (I subscribe to those too.) I don’t want a magazine that is filled with patterns. I want interesting articles about quilters and maybe how they are making a difference. Just do what you do best – create quilting interest!
#3. I am inspired by seeing other people creating works that I never would have thought of, but now have a starting off point. I love “modern” quilting and your magazine embodies that. I can’t wait to see what you look like when you “grow up” – just keep it fresh and inspiring.

2)It would be nice if all of the projects were in the magazine, instead of online, but I realize that would mean either more cost or fewer projects so it probably unrealistic.

1) I love the website and the facebook posts.
2) I love tutorials, you can never have too many tutorials.
3) Best inspiration is other peoples projects and tutorials. Esp. when what they make is something new and original (something I haven’t seen done before), coupled with a tutorial of how they made it. Preferably with instructions on how the new technique or original idea works, so it can be copied with my own personal spin.

First ~ what an amazing giveaway ~ this is one of the most generous ones I’ve ever seen!!! Thanks so much for the chance to win it!

1. What I like best about Gen Q is the content of your magazine ~ there’s so much packed into it and I’m inspired every time I get one!
2. Not so sure there’s anything you could do better. It’s always wonderful to see a new publication (I bought the first one) and how it’s evolved over time and gets better and better!
3. What inspires me to create? I’m not quite sure how to answer this ~ a fabric line, something I’ve seen in nature, a shadow on the wall, some photos my son has taken (one he took when he was in London ~ amazing and I’ve got to make a quilt after it), I could go on. I’m so inspired by other quilters too ~ there are so many creative people out there!

1. I like the accessibility of the material. It is obvious that you are intentional about inviting new/less confident quilters into “the club” and that is very appealing.
2. I would like more process photos, photos that show the steps along the way. I know it is hard to stop and take a picture when “it’s not done yet.” The quilt as desired article showing a marked piece, then the first quilted element…
3. My inspiration… having a project or goal starts the process then everything is a source of inspiration. Friend having a baby? Quilt show coming? Once I have a project in mind then the frozen grass in the yard is enough too make me think, hmm can I quilt that into the … whatever I am working on.

What I like best is the fresh, interesting articles featuring real people! what could you do better? gosh that’s hard! more small projects for us to do maybe? and inspiration is everywhere. but when I feel tapped out, I go into my studio & begin refolding my stash (it ALWAYS needs straightening!) and before I know it I’ve found a fabric I’d forgotten about and I’m making something! works every time

1. Reading the magazine, that way I can spread it out w/my project I’m making from it.
2. Short cuts to cutting. piecing. Applique-I’ve not yet attempted this in any form.
3. Inspiration comes from many blogs that I follow, your magazine and of course events in the lives of family or friends. Perhaps to a place they have traveled, I try to make a pillow or runner or quilt from a pic they have shared.

Happy New Year :) I love your photos – bright, clear, perfect! For me, I love seeing patterns that are full size, not ‘to be increased by 200%’ sort of thing. And lastly, I get inspiration from EVERYWHERE!! I see colour combinations in the gardens around me, patterns from the sidewalks and brickwork and shapes from everyday things. Inspiration is all around us!

Congrats on all of your success! I love this magazine especially the articles (love the humor) and product reviews. The fact that you have content outside of just more projects is appealing to me. God knows I have too many projects now anyway. The website is the only improvent I can think of and it sounds like you have that underway. :) . I love modern quilting and I get my inspiration from all kinds of random places, but architecture is a big one. Bright colors and solids are my faves. Keep up the good work!!

1. Quite simply, I love the content variety offered in GenQ.
2. GenQ is hard to find in magazine racks or quilt shops (subscribing is on my 2015 to-do list).
3. I’m inspired by fabric color and design. For example, I have a big collection of day of the dead fabric, I cannot explain it but I am drawn to it!

Congratulations! Hard questions, especially since I haven’t had enough coffee to wake up yet. What I like best about GenQ is that it is all inclusive. You offer a little something of interest for everyone and that is hard to do! So many magazines lately seem to follow trends or repeat similar themes from one issue to the next, NOT Gen Q. I have cut back on my magazines, but look forward to each issue of Gen Q because I know there will be something that will light a spark. What could you add? More frequent publications – lol! Easy for me to say, I know. Perhaps some more interviews of artists. I love reading about people, where they get their inspiration, how they create. What inspires me is hard to pin down. Sometimes it is seeing an old quilt, a fabric, or that I have procrastinated so long that I have to get something made pronto. Most of my inspiration comes from nature – changing the pattern of ice on the pond to a geometric design or a bird’s patterning. It really depends on my mood and the project. Congrats again and thank you for a quality publication! Happy New Year!

1. I like the size of the magazine. It is so much easier to handle than the larger magazines.
2. I would like to see some machine embroidery quilts shown.
3. Inspiration comes from many things but almost always from some type of graphic image. It does not have to be another quilt but it could be or from an ad showing new fabric. I like the unusual stuff.
Best wishes for a new year.

First I want to say that I haven’t seen the magazine. I have never seen it in my area available to buy. I found you via ‘WowIlikethat’ through their giveaway page. I would be interested in the digital magazine since it’s not in my area.

1. My first impression on looking through the page is that I like that it is easy to find your subscribe button and your Facebook button. I know that seems small, but many websites or Blogs make you hunt for it. Oh, I also love the idea behind your Block Builder feature. The web extras for each issue seem especially nice.

2. Again, I haven’t seen the magazine so I will comment on the web page. I was looking for what your site had to offer and I had trouble finding tutorials. If I were to sign up for a magazine that I couldn’t see in print first, seeing some free tutorials on the website would be a large buying factor. Not differing from when I visit blogs, the content gets me first, then I would want to spend money on patterns. When I found what you call the Q-torials (tutorials) and clicked on it there were only titles and no pictures to spark interest in the tutorial. Also the directory was a little confusing for someone new to the site.

3. Blogs with great tutorials are the number one thing that inspires me to create. They give me the vision to make things my own.

Have a great day!

2. Not sure you could do anything ‘better’, I love it just as it is.
3. I get inspired by a lot of things; a piece of art, nature, but usually I just pull fabrics I like together and go from there (Free-form, not a pattern user) ;)

1. I love websites, but really love to have something in print that I can hold in my very own little hands and refer back to it over and over again whenever needed for design inspiration or for the pattern or for instructions along the way. ☺
2. Being Better is easy ~ just continue to show us all of the newest and greatest things hitting the horizon out there in the quilty universe; feature and review new books, patterns, designers and fabric collections; and continue to impress us with your never ending knowledge of tips, tricks and short cuts for making life even more simplier and easier and more productive. ☺ Also, would love to read more “now, why didn’t I think about that!” types of inspirational stories. Everyone needs to laugh, so funny stories and “oh my goodness, you are not going to believe what just happened to me while I was tring to make that” type of articles would give us all a chance to laugh at ourselves because it’s likely we’ve done some of the same things, too. ☺
3. My biggest inspiration is my oh so sweet 11 year old granddaughter. She has been sewing with me since she could barely sit up on my lap. Just recently, she earned and saved enough money to buy her very own Bernette. She and I are looking forward to many fun filled days of stitching bliss together. It is such a blessing to share my passion with her and watch her develop into a great “sewer” herself. She has the desire to know all things related to this passion which we call a hobby and I am over the moon in wanting to help her know how to do absolutely everything there is out there! Projects for us to work on together would be an awesome addition! ☺

Facebook postings are great, but sometime they get lost in all of the other gazillion posts from everyone else out there in cyberland. One of my goals for 2015 is to simplify and declutter my life, so any help you could offer there would be greatly appreciated as well! Thanks for everything you do! :-D

Wishing all of y’all the absolute very best now and throughout the coming new year! Let’s make 2015 our best year ever! Let’s spread joy, love, happiness, laughter and the unending quest for knowledge amoung our sewing and quilting community and continue to share inspirations and ways to bring joy to our beloved passion with needle and thread.

2. It would be great if the magazine were monthly instead of every two months.
3. What best inspires me to create? Wow — that’s a hard one. But I guess I would have to say color and modern design. I had kind of gotten away from sewing for a little while – just bored with it I guess. I finally had the inspiration to redo my sewing area downstairs and the first thing was the huge pegboard wall where I had been just storing a mish-mash of sewing notions. It looked like a big old mess. Now there are brightly colored shelves with great looking contemporary artwork. So now I want to be down there working on things (and even exercising!!!). Now I’m having fun rediscovering all of the gorgeous colors and designs of fabrics in my stash and I think I just can’t get enough of online ideas and saving things to Pinterest.

2) I could get lost on your site for hours – what I probably need is a timer button that I could set to tell me is time to get off the Web and do some quilting!

1. I enjoy your magazine, GenerationQ. So many ideas

2. I think you are doing great. Best thing is not to get over run in ads. Perhaps run a small section in each edition like Binding – 2 1/2 inch strip you sew a 3/8 inch seam. Or tips that you use when doing a binding. There are a lot of us beginners that can’t find the info we need and that info is just taken for granted by experienced quilters. I have spent hours going through books looking for basic info that even the quilting encyclopedias don’t even have. So maybe each edition have a page with flashy edges (so it’s easy to find) that takes one small subject like binding variences and explains why you use a 2 1/2 or 3 or 3 1/2 inch strip and the reasons for a bias strip compared to a straight strip. Those tips and a different tip the next edition on maybe mitred corners compared to straight corners and your tips on each will start a following. Another idea in one edition under this section, is bed sizes, quilt sizes for each and tips on the over hang of each quilt. I find if the quilt is not wide enough then it travels across your bed. So, your tips and measurements on that. See, a whole new section. And maybe make it so people can also download this section so we can keep it in our “Book of Quilting Brains”.

3. What inspires me is your colour combinations. I am relatively new to quilting and stay in a safety zone of colours. To see other combinations and how you use them, gets my creative juices going and makes me braver to try other colours and combinations. Thank you.

I like an “out of the box” quilting magazine. I would like to get more insight of a designer and how their project evolves. Quilting magazines inspire my projects because honestly I’m not so creative, but I love to make things.

What I like about your magazine . . . .The price! I feel like I’m getting my money’s worth out of the magazine – not tons of ads for quilt cruises on every other page. I also do enjoy the size ( I know others have said it) but it does fit in my ginormous purse I lug everywhere. Digital would be GREAT!!! I think one of the best things about your magazine is the variety – its not all quilt patterns that are plugging an upcoming fabric line.
Well I see your working on your website and you’ve just joined instagram ( I feel your FB pain). I like to read about people’s quilting experiences – like putting a go pro on someone at QuiltCon. I mean you kind of already do that. It’d be fun for you to randomly show up at an LQS yard-crasher style and help someone choose fabrics just to see their reaction (it may not be good!).
I am inspired by color combinations – I love finding pictures or weird palettes and pulling fabrics that match and then deciding on my quilt pattern.

1.I really prefer reading the magazine, maybe because I’m old school, but it’s nice to hold it in my hands and study it.
2. I can’t see what you could improve on, except one thing ALL publishers of quilt stuff could improve on and that is to include instructions for people who are using paper half-square triangles or thangles or triangulations (my favorite).
3. What best inspires me to create is seeing photos of what others have done, or seeing a new technique. Second best is having a deadline to get me moving.

1. I love your magazine – it is the thinking person’s quilt magazine – not just pretty pictures and fabric adverts. It has serious articles we actually want to read.
2. I would love to see more articles on the story/history/aesthetics of quilting – detailed and informative telling us all about the background etc – not just here’s a quilt, here’s my sewing room, here’s some cute new fabric. You already have great content but I would love to see more. I also want you guys to be brave and push the boundaries – e.g. the time you included an alcoholic drink recipe and the columns by Megan Dougherty (miss her already :( ) – don’t give in to the politically correct fun police. If they don’t like the content they don’t need to buy the magazine.
3. What inspires me – I love bold use of colour :)

Keep up the great work I love your magazine. It is the best :)

DIGITAL!! You just made my year with that announcement! Anyway, for the questions: (1) I love the magazine’s irreverent tone. It’s not the same ol’, same ol’ like a lot of the other quilting magazines. (2) I enjoy smaller projects too, like runners, bags, etc. So maybe more of those? But really, I’m very satisifed with the magazine’s content. (3) My stash inspires me to create, although many times I end up fondling fabric and putting it back because I don’t want to cut into it!

1- I love love love the Block prompts. I rarely get one finished that I really like and I’ve never yet sent one in, but it does challenge me to think creatively.
2- I like seeing things I’ve not seen before or even thought of before. It seems lots of mags are rehashing the same patterns, but with new fabrics and new names just for content. What’d a waste of my time and money! So, that’s not a what you should do answer, but a what you shouldn’t do.
3- Seeing lots of pics of the same design in different fabrics, colors, etc. I think that’s why IG has been such a success among quilters.

Congratulations on 10,000 FB likes!

2. I would love to be able to follow your blog via GFC. I know there were some changes when Google Reader went away, but this is still the main way I follow blogs. I read them on my blogger dashboard. That way I get notification when there is something new to read.
3. I get inspiration from things I see around me. That’s very broad, I know, but it is true. Nature; things I see when I travel; things in magazines, books, or online; photos, blogs, etc.
