I know you hear us say this a lot, but this book is way cool. Really! Sew a Modern Home stitched and written by Melissa Lunden, and published by Martingale, is literally a quilty home reno plan between two covers. From crib sheets to pillows, play mats to place mats, quilts for the front porch (picnic) and quilts for the bedroom, Melissa gives us ideas to cover our homes in quilts with a modern, fresh flair. She helps us cover our homes in quilterly color, texture and technique, and her patterns are easily tweaked with fabrics and textures to fit our personal home style. (So, yes, your significant other can keep that wrecked lounger a little longer if you can drape a cool, new quilt over it.)
Picnic Quilt
Sure, we’ll share a few images from Melissa’s book, but we’re doing our homework a little differently from other stops on this book tour. We wanted to involve Melissa, as well as these pages she’s labored over.
GenQ: What’s the strangest home you’ve ever lived in?
ML: I lived for a couple of years in a funky A-frame house that was not my style at all. It was cool in its own way, but it wasn’t my first choice in architectural design. I tried really hard to appreciate the best things about it like focusing on the high ceilings and the decks and pretending the other stuff didn’t bother me.
Playroom Plushies
Gen Q: What’s the first thing you ever sewed for your home?
ML: Of course, I started sewing pillows for my home, but the first big project I did was to make a quilt for my now-husband. He had a beautiful Japanese men’s kimono and pajama set that was given to him as a present. He never wore them so we decided that using the material for a quilt that would get used all the time was the best way to honor the intention of the gift. I mixed in a charm pack of gorgeous traditional Japanese prints and white sashing. It was early on in my quilting days and I quilted it on my tiny Brother sewing machine and could barely quilt it because it was so big. Even though it is super simple and the quilting leaves something to be desired, it is still a favorite.
Boys’ Room quilt
Gen Q: So do you have a home dec story gone awry?
ML: About six years ago, I up and decided that I was going to make a slip clover for my couch along with new cushion covers. I had absolutely no experience doing such a big project, but I just went for it! It looked pretty good from a distance, but let’s just say, it wasn’t my finest work.

Bedroom Quilt
Gen Q: Would you have any tips and hints for the Chevron Starburst Pillow? (Readers, see the book cover at the top of this post. This pillow is at the left.)
ML: I use a clear square ruler to cut fussy cut triangles, rather than cutting squares (and then cutting them in half) as called for in the pattern. The square technique absolutely works but if you are using a tricky print like the chevrons I used for the pillow and want everything to match up exactly, cutting triangles really helps. It is a little more labor intensive, but you will get the exact look you want. You don’t need to do this with most fabrics, but if you are working with a print that has a very specific repeat, it might help.

I love the plushie toys and the bold boy’s quilt!
I use my quilty work to decorate my home. My favorite thing is a paper pieced red and white mini wall hanging. Thanks for the giveaway. All of her projects are lovely.
I just went back to work full-time so, unfortunately, I have to answer “–No, right now I decorate with laundry and I rarely dust.”.
. Thanks for the chance to win!
I’ve always used quilts to decorate my home, mostly wall quilts and pillows. My fav project lately is a small improv bird quilt. It’s totally unlike my usual work.
–No, right now I decorate with laundry and I rarely dust.
My favourite thing: cushions! I’m made about creating new ones, whether it’s seat cushions for my dining chairs or big, fluffy ones for my sofa! I recently made hexagon seat cushions and I love their unusual shape!
Thanks for the chance to win!
I do use my quilts and pillows around the house. Right now my favorite thing is a pillow i made for a Michael Miller challenge as part of my modern quilt guild. Sincerely, Paula K.
I love all things quilty AND home dec. my most recent project was floor length drapes for DGD’s bedroom. My current project is a wall quilt for my family room using Lotta Jansdotter fabrics. Mmm, that will mean nor pew home dec pillows, maybe drapes….. LOL! Thanks for the chance. I like the boys quilt, great for a teen.
Yes, I usually give what I make away…although I’d love to make myself a Christmas quilt!
Yes and no! I send a lot of stuff away for swaps, but finally I am sewing for us!!!! (and swapping) My favorite recent project is a simple mini quilt; I’m working on a quilt for each family member and about 6 different pillows for our sofa
I’m in Sweden, so please enter me for the pdf version.
I do use my projects in my home. My latest have been a paper pieced table topper and a songbird wall hanging. I’m also working on a hexagon quilt for my couch.
1. Yes! My stitchy life revolves around home dec — some for my home and some for the homes of friends and family!
2. My fave thing: right now, I’m totally carried away with table runners.
I do both with my quilt projects. I give lots away. But I also keep lots for my house. My father designed a living room with vaulted ceilings. So we have plenty of hanging space.
My favorite redecorating story is when my husband and I redid our bedroom. Cranberry on the walls, lilac on the ceiling and I recreated an 8 point log cabin star for the wall next to the bed. It was and still is awesome.
While I have given plenty away, my home is awash with wall quilts, table runners, pillows, organizers, fabric bowls, placemats–well you get the picture. I love doing table runners for a quicker fix on playing with designs and colors.
So far I’ve given most of my things away- but the next project is all mine
And my home is protected by a herd of dust bunnies! Thanks for the chance to win!
I decorate with my quilts, but I also give my quilts away. My fave thing is making small welcome quilts for each season.

Quilt. Sew. Live. Breathe.
1. Yes! I’m starting to focus on home decorating on anything other than bed quilts.
2. My fave thing: items that can be used for storage, e.g., bins.
I wouldn’t say my life revolves around quilting and I do decorate with laundry :@ but the fabric stash is pretty special.
My fave deco project, the puppies sitting at my feet.
A few months ago I made six chair cushions for my daughter. I went to a decorator to see what they would cost. When I got the estimate, I almost fell over. So I check around the Internet and asked some questions. I did order the fabric from the decorator, but made them myself and saved the cost of the labor which was pretty high. I’m not opposed to making things myself if it’s within my “skill set,” but do the research first. The foam company wrapped the cushions I order for a small extra fee. Coming from a clothing background, the zipper(s) were not a problem. So now I’m embarking on making quilts, etc for our anticipated home renovation and this book is so “right on” in terms of ideas. I like the simple lines of Modern Quilting with a nod to traditional blocks.
I love the Desert Morning Quilt and am in desperate need of a more modern looking bed covering. It’s beautiful in it’s simplicity and coolness of color, although I would probably use alter the color scheme somewhat, but keep it cool looking. From what I can see on the different blogs, there are quite a few patterns that are calling my name. Thank you for the giveaway opportunity.
I’m afraid I’m going to have to go with, No, right now I decorate with laundry and rarely dust. My sister came to visit on Sunday and she came over and asked me if I had ever hear of a Swiffer duster.
I have quilts all over my house.. on walls, couches, beds, tables. I love making table runners for both myself & as gifts. This book has so many wonderful ideas!
What an interesting book! I use many of my quilting projects to decorate my home. My favorite projects are table runners and small wall quilts. Thanks for the great giveaway!
Yes, I love to decorate my home with quilted items – quilts, wall hangings, pillows etc. My favourite thing is a Christmas quilt that my friends make for me. I hangs on the wall from the middle of November until the end of January.
1. Do you use your quilty work to decorate your home (or do you give it all away)?
–Yes! My stitchy life revolves around home dec. That fabric stash rivals my quilting stash!
2. So if you’re a deco-fiend, what is your fave project lately?
My fave thing: The bed quilt I’m in the process of making. I love all the bright colors and can’t wait to see it on the bed.
1. –No, right now I decorate with laundry and I rarely dust. This is so true!
2. See number 1 above.
Thanks for the chance!
I do both to my quilty stuff, use it AND give it. Can’t use it all! Love that pillow and it would be my project.
1. Do you use your quilty work to decorate your home (or do you give it all away)?
Recently I have been giving my quilts away. It is probably time I made some for myself.
2. So if you’re a deco-fiend, what is your fave project lately?
My fave thing: (just finished) new curtains for my sewing room!
On Thursday, Aug.28, we’ll draw a random winner, who’ll win an e-book of Sew a Modern Home
I have only started quilting, so my only decorating project is the quilts that I made for my twin babies’ room. I chose all the colors in the room from a charm pack I purchased, and the quilts were done one day before the boys arrived.
I do keep some of my Quilty work…but is such fun to give them to special folk’s I love!

2. So if you’re a deco-fiend, what is your fave project lately? (When I do Deco!)
My fave thing: Curtains!
