Prize Time!

by melissa on October 17, 2012

In a parallel universe, we’re fat, jolly, have whiskers and wear a fuzzy red suit… ‘cuz we love giving stuff away! And that’s just what we’re going to do today.

Emily Cier’s Pixel Play Giveaway

To celebrate Emily’s latest book, Pixel Play (C & T Publishing, 2012), we asked you to tell us what favorite image/scene/memory/photo you’d put into fabri-pixels. From Emily, mistress of the Carolina Patchworks blog, the randomly selected winner will receive a copy of Pixel Play, wrapped in a surprise box that will have other treats. From GenQ, the winner will also receive Issues 1 and 2 of GenQ, plus 3 FQs from our magic fabric closet.

And the winner is….

Jane S., who wants to pixellate her pig. Here’s what she had to say: “I’d pixelize a photo of the pig we had when I was a teenager. In the photo he is eating some fruit that had fallen off the plum tree, and he is smacking his lips and looks like he is laughing with joy! We’ve had quite a few pigs since then but I will always love Otis.”

So, Jane, give us a shout and let us know your mailing address. If you’re from outside the United States, we’ll also need your phone number for shipping forms. (And look for your prize in mid-November, once the Quilt Market fog has cleared.)

Julie Herman’s Skip the Borders! Giveaway

We also helped our pal Julie Herman (of Jaybird Quilts fame) launch her first book, Skip The Borders! (Martingale, 2012) with a blog tour that just ended. To vie for a free e-book, we asked you to tell us if you’ve ever gone commando…on your quilts, that is. And we’ll pull two happy names out of the random hat. Both winners will receive a free e-book version of Skip the Borders!. The winners are:

Carla Esser Lake—“Sometimes I think ‘commando’ might be my middle name. I enjoy the creative process more than I enjoy reading and following directions. Are the results ever perfect? Not really. But I have a lot of fun!”

Patti—“Umm, borderless? Does this mean I have to actually finish one? Guess it does, but so far I haven’t. Sorry, but I am new to this (even though I’m older than, well, almost anyone I know in the quilting world so far). But I would really love this book and would treasure it and finish something.”

So, Carla and Patti, get in touch and we’ll make arrangements to send you the link to your free e-book. As we mentioned before, please grant us a little post-Market grace, and we’ll get this to you mid-November.

And now for our own giveaway…

Think you’d like to have this tasty jelly roll of Simply Color by V & Co for Moda Fabrics. Well, you’ve got a shot!

Here’s how: You might have heard a little buzz in the blogosphere about people going to Houston, that mecca of autumnal quilt madness. Well, most of us here at GenQ are Market-bound in a few days, and we know a lot of you are, too.

So tell us: Are you going to Market? Or do you travel elsewhere in the world on quilty/stitchy business? Comment on this post and tell us about a recent or upcoming fabric-fondling trip. (And don’t just stop with the “where.” Go on and brag a little about what you did or what you’re going to do once you get there, because a little self-expression is good for the soul, sweet pea!)

We’ll announce a winner on Friday, Oct. 19.

Ho, ho, ho!

The only trip I have taken to fondle fabric is to Sisters last summer. It was a wonderful celebration of quilts and I brought back lots of fabric.

I don’t travel much to shows yet. I have only gone to two. The one that I went to this year I ended up buying a longarm! I love it. This is now my concentration. Get tops done and quilt. I have started quilting for others now.

Not going to market, but I do go to LA a couple times a year-kids, grandkids, etc! I was there a couple of months ago & made the trek to Michael Levines downtown! I didn’t buy any quilting fabric but enjoyed fondling it. But I loaded up on knits-beautiful stuff & can’t beat the price!

I just came back from the Sewing Summit in Utah! I made lounge pants! Had a ball socializing with like-minded individuals, such a treat. On my spare day I hammered rocks, colelcting fossils – so I got to fondle ancient bugs as well as lovely fabrics!

I didn’t go expressly for the quilting, but when I researched Hungary for a trip I went on last week, I discovered a place that does the old style blue cloth dying (kekfesto). I found the shop and brought back enough fat quarters for the sewing group I am in and more for me. Now I have to decide on a project to use it. It’s really pretty.

Well, I have never been to a quilt market, but on a recent trip to Klamath Falls, Oregon, imagine my surprise when, out in the middle of nowhere (we were on an exploring, picnic-ing trip) we found the most charming little quilt shop.
Quilting Sisters in run by a wonderful lady, who opened up her shop just for us when we explained we were from BC and Colorado. She offers classes using vintage Singer machines, and she had a wonderful selection of Batiks that we happily purchased.

sigh … i am no longer traveling or driving, but my daughter and her grandaughter drove down fromthe big city and brought me back with them for a visit and shopping. so, we made the rounds of all the fabric and yarn shops; what fun. i loaded up! i expounded on the fine qualities of fabric and fiber once again, but they were only ho-hum, can you imagine? sad to think i’ve been unable to pass handcrafting along after generations of crafty women.

Well, unfortunately I don’t get to go to Market – but boy I’d love to! I do try to go to a local quilt shop every time I travel with my husband, so I’ve gone to little quilt shops in houses at the beach, or up in the mountains; one in the Farmer’s Market in Seattle, too! It’s always fun to find a great fabric store and buy some local fabrics to work into a permanent souvenir of a wonderful trip!

I used to own a yarn store and our market Mecca wad TNNA in Columbus OH. It was always a whilrwind of experiences and emotions. The last trip I made was totally last minute. My daughter was 5 months old and I didn’t think I could leave her… until the night before market started. It was s much needed recharge and I felt a renewed energy in my business. Now the only travel I do of the fiber/stitchy variety and thi s weekend is Rhinebeck! AKA New York Sheep and Wool festival and its always the weekend closest to my birthday so for me its the perfect celebration. This year the will be copious amounts of roving purchased as I learner yo spin this summer.
I hope to attend quilt market in Houston some day cause if its anything like TNNA then it must be awesome. Id also like to go to QuiltCon, Sewing Summit, and Sock Summit next time around. Cant wait yo see all the goodies you bring back.

:( No I am not heading to market. So I guess I’ll make due with hitting a couple of my favorite quilt shops and the Joanns in the area. Am thinking of starting a Weekender Bag with that SAL happening out in Blog land for this weekend. In the mean time, I found fabric sin my stash to work on a little bed quilt for my grand daughter. Hot pink, Aqua with some yellows thrown in the mix. Perfect for her.

Well, it was a bit of a sad trip….a local quilt store, Seventh Heaven, is shutting down because the owner has decided to retire. They always carried a lovely selection of reproduction fabrics, about the best selection in San Antonio. While I was sad that they are closing, I was happy to get some repros @ 30 off….

I don’t travel for quilty business, my budget just doesn’t allow it :( I would LOVE to attend market or Sewing Summit though. I do, however, visit a friend once a year for a weekend sew-a-thon. She lives about 4 hours away and I drive up and stay at her mom’s house and the three of us (plus some of their family members and friends, we don’t turn anybody away!) sit and sew for an entire weekend. We stay up all night long, sleep in a bit and then get started right away the next morning. We do a bit of fabric shopping of course, and then go home and sew some more! It’s always a blast and such a refreshing weekend for all involved.

Though I’m not going to fall market, I was able to go to spring market in Kansas City. I did that right on the heels of winning a best of show ribbon for one of my quilts, at the Machine Quilter’s Showcase in Overland Park, Kansas. My prize was a new Bernina Aurora 440 sewing machine! It’s now my regular sewing machine, and I’m happy as a clam using it. Thanks for the chance to win a V&Co. jelly roll!
