Sure, you can stick those unused pins into an empty Altoids tin, but the only statement that makes about your style is that you favor utility above sensibility. Now, that’s not all bad. Utility is a fine thing for things like vacuums and skillets. But every now and then, a color-lovin’ sewist has gotta have bling. Such as these gleaming swirls of art glass with useful little pincushions in the middle of their awesomeness.
These hunks of glassy color come from Glasscapes by Mingo & Asho, furnace-glass artists we’ve often encountered at West Coast quilt shows. Quilters love their stuff. (Heck, anyone who loves color loves their stuff.) At least two of us have Mingo & Asho glass pendants in our jewelry collections, and let’s just say that if you love pulling fabrics for a quilt, you’ll love pawing through the rainbow of their pendants and glass beads.
But back to the pincushions. These were hot out of the glass furnace, so to speak, when we saw them at the International Quilt Festival in Long Beach just a few weeks ago. Obviously shapes, sizes and colors vary, but each cushion is filled with wool and covered in a complementary swatch of velour. Check out the duo’s fine work here, but if you’re interested in the new pincushions, which sell for a measly $26 to $28 each, you’ll have to contact the artists to see what they have available.
