Pam Holland To Share About Her Bayeux Redux
Quilter, teacher and author Pam Holland is visiting the Texas Quilt Museum in La Grange on Saturday, July 26, to give a presentation about her recreation of a historically significant work, The Bayeux Tapestry. In her talk, The Bayeux Tapestry: The Story-telling Textile of the Norman Conquest, she’ll the tell the story of making this 230-foot-long quilt (yes, you read that correctly) that commemorates this very important tapestry from the early 11th century. The Bayeux Tapestry gives us a visual record of the Norman Conquest from the Battle of Hastings, which led to the writing of the Magna Carta, the first document establishing the right of people to be governed by law rather than the whim of kings and lords.

BERNINA University Yields New Machines, Dealer Honors
BERNINA of America recently held its annual dealers convention, BERNINA University (BU) in Nashville, TN, home of the Grand Old Opry and Antique Archaeology (who doesn’t love old vintage signs, machines and loads of fun?). BU offers dealers the opportunity to learn new techniques, machine maintenance, see new product and more importantly spend time and have fun together. (Follow #berninaselfie for a bit of fun. Rumor has it a certain associate editor has a photo or two).
Quilty celebs Ricky Tims, Tula Pink, Angie Steveson, Luke Haynes, Alex Veronelli, Kaye England, Sarah Vedeler and others taught or had vendor booths.
Awards also revealed at BU: Perry Lytton of Mel’s Sewing & Fabric Center in Anaheim and Tustin, Calif., who celebrated his store’s 58th anniversary this year, received the 2013 BERNINA Presidential Award. South Dakota Quilter Wins Quilt Alliance ‘Inspired By’ Competition
A colorful paper-pieced and appliqued creation by JoAnn Hoffman of Hill City, SD, won the Quilt Alliance’s annual quilt contest. The theme was “Inspired by” with each entry claiming inspiration from one of the thousands of quilts listed in the online Quilt Index.

“I love the Quilt Alliance contests because it makes you think out of the box and stretch your imagination,” says Hoffman.
This is the first year the Quilt Alliance asked competitors to use the online index as a beginning resource.
“Our theme was a real departure this year, requiring quilters to start with a quilt from our online resources as a specific inspiration. We worried this would seem daunting and scare off some potential contestants, but we’ve been pleasantly surprised,” says Meg Cox, president of the Quilt Alliance. “While a good number of quilters used one of the quilts we chose in an Inspiration Gallery, a great many dug into the archives on their own. The range of styles and techniques they pursued is impressive, as is the overall quality of the quilts. Now, we can use the quilts from this contest as specific examples of how The Quilt Index and Q.S.O.S. (Quilters’ Save Our Stories) can inspire quilters, and I hope that will help spur an increase in traffic to our popular site.”

The 2015 Quilt Alliance contest theme is “Animals We Love” and guidelines will be available on the Quilt Alliance website by Aug. 8. “Our mission is to document, preserve and share the stories of (all) quilts and (all) quiltmakers,” says Cox. “We encourage everyone who makes quilts to enter our annual contest regardless of their style (traditional, modern, art) or technique (longarm, hand quilting, applique, pieced…) –all are welcomed and valued!”
