Have you started on your back-to-school prep yet? We always know when the season starts. Those office supply store ads trumpeting spiral notebooks and Elmer’s glue for just pennies are a dead giveaway. (Oh, and the faint sound of the local high school’s drum line beating early in the morning, as marching band practice starts up. That’s the one Melissa Maher loves to hear on her a.m. dog walks.) BONUS: If you’re lucky enough to be heading to International Quilt Festival in Long Beach, California, this weekend, be sure to catch GenQ’s own Jake Finch during her free presentation on modern quilting and how it connects to today’s art quilting community. She’s speaking on Saturday, July 30 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the stage in the back of the convention center as part of the SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates) lecture series. Jake, thank you so much for the wonderful presentation tonight. Being relatively new to the modern movement, hearing you speak about the characteristics of a modern quilter gave me a sense of relief. I’ve felt conflicted in wanting to express my aesthetic but feeling guilty in veering from traditional techniques and patterns. You’ve given me the confidence to trust my instincts and embrace the modern. And seeing all the awesome quilt was so sew inspiring! 😉
