Slosh: Stitch-On-The-Beach

Staff mixologist Zach Mooney is playing to our inner beach bunny with this Slosh pick, a robust rum-based cocktail with a fruity island vibe. And it sooo fits! Most of us are huddled under our quilts (or our unquilted tops), eyeing the latest weather forecast with grim acceptance. However our minds are miles away, where warm sand, ocean breezes and the scent of sunscreen chase away all cares and cogent thought.

Today’s Slosh showcases rum, which has kind of been a spirit-in-the-spotlight since early 2016. We’re using Black Strap rum by Cruzan. Its distinct licorice and molasses flavors add an exotic flair to any tropical drink, making it a key player in retro Tiki cocktails and punches. Zach’s a big Tiki* fan, and chose the Jungle Bird as the basis for our drink. Our version has just a touch more pineapple and lime juices, but definitely make it to match your taste.

“I like it because it’s balanced, approachable and embodies the spirit of a classic Tiki cocktail without needing insane ingredients you’ll only use for one or two drinks,“ Zach says.

This is a perfect après-sew sipper for a UFO friends’ retreat. May we suggest pairing it with crab rangoons, spring rolls, jerk chicken or spicy pork?

*The Tiki movement is in its second (or is it third?) incarnation on the U.S. cocktail scene since the craze first emerged in the mid-1930s. Think Don the Beachcomber and Trader Vic.

How is it that TWO of our staffers are reading books on rum right now? Melissa is wading through And a Bottle of Rum by Wayne Curtis, which explores the history of the New World through 10 rum cocktails. And Zach recommends Beachbum Berry’s Potions of the Carribean by Jeff Berry, which mixes history with recipes for 77 vintage West Indies cocktails.

Holy cow. I don’t even drink and I am ready to sprawl under a palm tree and slurp one of these down. Yes, please!
