Show And Tell: Staff’s Fave Holiday Ornaments

teri • December 23, 2014 • 3 Comments

At GenQ, we’re an eclectic bunch of sew and sews,  that’s for sure! So when a call (well, e-mail) was sent out to the staff asking for a favorite fabric holiday ornament, we weren’t surprised with the results. Somehow, the picks matched the personalities.

First up is  Community Editor Scott Hansen’s:

Says Scott: “Here is a pair of my favorite ornaments. They have actually been hanging in the studio for the past couple of years. I didn’t make either of them, but I just love them both. The one on the left is a vintage parrot that I bought probably five years ago or so. I am thinking it is a 1950’s or 1960’s piece. The one on the right is a new one I found at Houston Fall Quilt Market in 2013. I bought the second one because it reminded me so much of the first. I am extremely fond of unusual Christmas ornaments and have a particular soft spot for vintage, as well as animals.”
Now, from Editor-in-Chief Melissa Thompson Maher:
She says:  “Here’s my ornament. It’s a little fabric tree my sister Beth made for us in 1993. That was the first time our entire family (all four sisters, husbands, grandkids, Mom and Dad) took a ski vacation in Winter Park, Colorado. We all saved our pennies and instead of gifts, gave each other little tokens. Beth’s was this simple tree. We only got to do a big trip like this one other time as an extended family, so this ornament is a special reminder of a treasured time.
“Epilogue–My daughter Delia (one of the grandkids), lives and works as a snowboard coach in Winter Park today, maybe influenced by that long-ago family time. Her home is not far from the large vacation rental home we all stayed in 21 years ago.”
From Advertising Manager Michelle Freedman:
Michelle says she has been on a mission to “save the angels,” especially vintage angels for years now. “I have to find them and they need to be on my tree. The angles make me happy,” she says.
From Art Director Lisa Lauch:

She says, “This is a Hardanger Christmas tree ornament that I made for my parents years ago. I learned Hardanger as a needlecraft when we lived in Minnesota from a Norwegian lady…I think! My parents moved into a retirement center a couple years ago and decided that they didn’t want to decorate a tree anymore, so I recently inherited all the ornaments that I have made for them over the years. This year, it is on my daughter’s tree and I think it looks fabulous!”
Here’s Publisher Jake Finch’s pick:

Jake says her fave ornament is a handmade gift from a very dear friend.

HEADS UP: We’re working on a complete redo of our website. We hope to reveal this product of creative brilliance (not ours–our designer’s) after the first of the year. In this process, our existing website has needed some tweaks. PLEASE, if you see a problem with the website in the coming weeks, let us know? Either here on FB or to me directly? We want to make sure everything is as seamless as possible. My email is jake@generationqmagazine.com. Thanks!! Oh, and BTW: the reveal of the new site will be accompanied by lots of fireworks and free stuff. We’re cleaning out the GenQ closet this week. Stay tuned!

AND FINALLY…Grab your loved ones and squeeze them tight this season, whatever holiday you celebrate. It’s a special time, and you are special people to us. We offer our most sincere hugs and thanks for your support through the years (oooh! we still get a tingle typing that y-word!). And we wish you peace, joy, love, health and prosperity. And plenty of sewing time!

Quilt. Sew. Live. Breathe.

What fun! I haven’t put up a tree for a few years, but I always loved the old glass ornaments my mom had.

Michelle’s saving the angels made me want to post this. When my husband and I found each other some 35+ years ago there was a treetop angel that was already 10 years old that was being used. She was in a very sad state because of where she was stored (too much moisture). So over the years that followed I have done a lot of “salvation” work. All that remains of the original is her plastic head and torso and the wire coil that holds her to the tree. I have remade her wings, arms , skirt and re wired the lights. So she fits perfectly with our blended family. If I knew how to post a picture here I would share that with you too.
