Quilt Market, Quilt Market bring me a Dream

You know at a quilt show, when when you stop to listen and what you hear is an excited hum on the show floor? Yeah, that. The buzz on the International Quilt Market floor is no less exciting to hear, and we definitely heard the buzz last month in Houston. Fabric companies were showing new lines, notions companies were showing new products, and several machine companies displayed new machines (including a new mid-arm…drool!)

It can be overwhelming to share all we saw and heard with you, but here are some glimpses. (And there will be more to come!):

*  More bling…in crystals, metallics in fabric, automatic sequin rolls for long arming, etc.
* Berry colors in varying hues.
*  More and more chalkboard fabrics or chalboard motifs in designs, including Christmas-sy designs.
* Animals and more animals. Penguins, foxes, and the ever-present woodland beasties.
* Pastels. (Yeah, we know!)
* Waaaaay more batiks, including companies new to producing them
* Denim by Art Gallery Fabrics
* Double gauze by many, including Cotton + Steel and Michael Miller.

Other fabric crushes: The too-stinking cute ninja gnomes from Michael Miller (the juxtaposition of warrior and gardener is pretty cool) and Mystic by Valori Wells for Robert Kaufman, inspired by her recent trip to Marrakesh.
There were new fabric players, too, including a new  launch of quilting cottons by EBI in a new division run by Karen Gibbs. A couple of great little print lines. My favorite is Moss Rose Cottage. It is rumored that there may be a Christmas version of this collection, too.
Quilting Treasures also scored with Ink & Arrow, its new design division. I & A had lots of cool edgy prints with a distinct sense of humor.
Best part of Market? The people, hands down. The convergence of enthusiasm, ideas, inspiration and potential is intoxicating!

So is the constant element of change. Change can be uncomfortable, even in a world that creates comfort, but there’s always growth, and that’s always a good thing!

Quilting’s past and present inform our future and reassure us that opportunities abound. That like the designers, inventors, artists and authors who bring new product to Market, we should take the risks, share our visions, and enjoy the ride.

    Ohh! I’m enticed but the new mid-arm machine. Any hints who’s the manufacturer?
