The Big Reveal: Quilts Made Modern Block Challenge Winners

And the Winners Are…

Last week, when Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr of Fun Quilts  stopped by on their blog tour for their new book, Quilts Made Modern (C & T Publications, 2011), we assigned them some homework. GenQ staffer Scott Hansen (also of Blue Nickel Studios fame) drew a partially developed block and we asked Weeks and Bill to go off into separate corners and give us their best shot for an original block from Scott’s partial start.

They did and we showed you the handsome—and very different results. Click here to refresh your memory.

Soooo, the next thing was to ask you Q-bies to have a go, and several of you actually took us up on the challenge. We had 10 very different blocks submitted (including one from a supportive  husband and all-around good sport, who decided he’d try his hand at this craft his bride is obsessed with). Our judging panel—consisting of the GenQ staff and Weeks and Bill—has arrived at a decision of whose block tickled our collective fancy the most. And it was this fetching rendition of a martini glass by Sue Laughton!

Sue wins her very own copy of Quilts Made Modern plus a nifty Beach Glass Quilts memo cube fto celebrate her Challenge win. (And you all win the paper piecing pattern and directions to make Sue’s block, which GenQer Jake has set into a fabric frame for a fetching wall quilt. (If you can’t be drinking one, at least you can look at one.)

But the also-rans were still pretty darned wonderful, so we awarded second place to Steve Lennert of Oregon City, Oregon, for this version:

And third place goes to Sarah Kelman of Fullerton, California, for this version:

Our second and third place winners will receive a Beach Glass Quilts memo cube.

We couldn’t stop there, though. We just have to share all the other blocks we received in this fabric-less challenge:

Heather Gruber

Heather Gruber’s husband

Marcia Wright, Trenton, Florida

Tess Holland, San Pedro, California

Kelly Hubbard of Ada, Michigan

MiChal Hall

Lisa England of Ashland, Kentucky

Hugs and thanks to everybody who participated! We really love it that you got into the spirit of things, even if it required some mind-bending, as Sue Laughton confesses. Says Sue: “It was a bit hard to get Bill’s and Weeks’ blocks out of my head, so first I played some ‘Bubble Town.’ Then I tried again. Mmmmm, still awfully similar to theirs. So I played a bit of Moxie2….and decided I needed to turn the block sideways & try that. Success! I have to say, I thought of Jake when it was finished.  ;^) “

That’s okay, Sue. She forgives you.

As promised, we’ve got the pattern for Sue’s winning block and instructions for making it into a fabulous mini-quilt. Just click here or on the picture below to download the PDF.

    Congrats to Sue!

I love Heather’s block and I would love to make Sarah’s in another colourway, and wow do I love Kelly’s Frank Lloyd Wright-ish block – I wanna run right out and make a whole quilt out of them.

How did you ever pick a winner?

    Congrats to Sue again!

    WoooOOoooHOOoooOOO!!

Thanks everyone – this was a fun challenge. Isn’t it amazing all the different blocks we came up with from the same starting place? All of the blocks are wonderful.
I’m excited to see Jake’s rendition of my block in fabric!

Woo hoo! Thank you for finding my block worthy of third place! The competition was stiff. Sue’s and Steve’s designs are awesome. I’d love to pop them all into EQ and see what secondary designs they form. I think MiChal’s, Lisa’s, Heather’s, and Heather’s husband’s would each make interesting secondary designs. And I love the sophisticated color palettes Kelly, Tess, and Marcia worked with. So inspiring!

Great blocks! I sketched most of them, re-created them in EQ7 then made created some virtual quilts. Some of them are quite wonderful. Thanks for tapping into the talent that created them!
