We first were introduced to Casey York way back in 2012 when she submitted quilts to us in our very first year. Believe us when we say we knew back then that Casey had something special.Next she presented us with her first book Modern Appliqué Illusions. We are smitten with her enthusiasm and joy in presenting her books and quilts.
The Appliqué Book dedication speaks of the entire team of people contributing to the book including Rossi Hutchinson, Lynn Harris (We Sew 2 Contributor), Luke Haynes, Latifah Saafir, Kevin Kosbab, Betz White, Bari J Ackerman, Sarah Fielke, Carolyn Friedlander, Denyse Schmidt, and so many more.

The format of the book is a little bit different, combining patterns with profiles of quilters who use various appliqué techniques in their work. Not only does this offer insight into the technique, it allows us to see what the quilters use in their own work. This is essential a “giving of permission” to try something new, combine techniques, to be brave.

In Cindy Lammon‘s Forward to the book it is this bravery that captured Cindy’s attention in getting to know Casey. Casey is willing to try the technique while remaining true to the Modern Style of quilt making that she loves so much. By exploring a variety of techniques this gives the greatest amount of options for our own quilts. We can find the appliqué technique that suits us best. And we’d daresay try each style, Basic Machine, Raw Edge, Turned-Edge, Reverse, Bias-Tape, and Free-Form more than once to get a real feel for the technique.

Shannon Brinkley Migration Casey York Applique
Shannon Brinkley’s Migrations Quilt Sampler is a whole new, rather exciting take on flying geese, employing a variety of appliqué techniques. That Shannon’s binding has a different color on one corner gives the quilt a little bit of fun and whimsy.

Oh! and remember making paper chains? Debbie Grifka certainly does and has make a quilt with this lovely childhood reminder. Debbie makes great use of bias tape makers, making the paper rings shapes possible. Oh the endless fun we can have.

Astrid, by Lynn Carson Harris is quite the stunner and a wee bit of a surprise. The photo doesn’t do this quilt justice with the reverse appliqué, a minimalist approach with a dynamic, and stunning effect. The little pops of color on the Peacock blue background gives all new meaning to a little bit goes a long way.

Now, of course we have an opportunity to win a copy of The Appliqué Book. US winners will receive a hard copy of the book; international an e-book. Simply let us know your favorite topping for pizza. Yes, Q-bies, you read that correctly. What’s your favorite pizza topping. We will choose a winner on Thursday April 1st. And no, we promise it will not be an April Fools Prank.

My favourite pizza topping is bocconcini, prosciutto and rocket lettuce. Yum. Although I also love margherita pizza, which maybe reflects why I love the look of this appliqué book – some really simple but also lots of different options.
