Now Touring: That Little Spark: 30 Ways to Ignite Your Creativity

teri • December 06, 2014 • 4 Comments

Here’s an early gift for you (and it won’t even need wrapping).  Carrie Bloomston’s book, The Little Spark–30 Ways to Ignite Your Creativity.  The marketing blurb about this new Stash Books release says it’s an  “interactive road map to help you step into the sparkly life of creativity and passion”…whether your creative dreams are of sewing, baking, dancing or painting.

“It offers activities and inspiration to help you uncover the creativity you were born with and helps you remove some of your obstacles (doubt, fear, perfectionism, lack of time, etc.)” the marketing-speak goes on to say.

Sign us up! We already love Carrie’s work as a pattern and fabric designer in her business, SUCH Designs, and for Windham Fabrics.  And we totally trust her instincts for helping us to achieve more creatively.

That Little Spark 30 Ways to Ignite Your Creativity  is one of those must-have books in any quilters collection. In The Little Spark Carrie encourages us to feed and nurture our creativity through 30 Sparks that, while presented in the chronological chapters of the book, can be done in any order and time frame.

With chapters titled “Make a Huge Mess,” “Permission,” “Inner-kid Care,” “Inspiration,” “Doubt,” “Fear,” “Shine Your Light” and “Trust Yourself” Carrie invites the reader to live a creative life through exercises that nurture and feed creativity, acknowledging doubt and fear and just plain “going for it.”

As she writes:  “Creativity is like a pilot light – it’s always on even if you’re not using the stove.”  She gives us permission to shine our own light, make a mess and play.

While the book is presented in a chronological order Carrie encourages us to explore in the way that makes the most sense and in the time frame, from 30 days to 30 weeks, that suits our schedules.  (And can we say that many of her exercises are truly compelling? As I read The Little Spark to prepare this review, I wanted to immediately stop and explore a few of the exercises! All right, all of them, really. And in the middle of writing this post, I took a moment to enjoy a tiny pumpkin pie I had made with my own hands, enjoying its spicy warmth and physically enjoying the results of that earlier creative moment. Yeah, it’s that kind of book.)

Do you honestly need more convincing? Check out Carrie’s video invitation: The Little Spark. This is that personal invitation we all want to explore our creativity. Find more Carrie-ness on  facebook, twitter @suchdesigns, and Pinterest.
