Now Touring: No Scrap Left Behind

tracy • May 02, 2017 • 283 Comments

I met Amanda Jean Nyberg at my very first Quilt Market ever. She was debuting her book, Sunday Morning Quilts (co-authored with Cheryl Arkison) and I was lucky enough to procure an autographed copy of my very own. So when Amanda Jean asked me to join the blog tour for her new book, No Scrap Left Behind (Stash Books/C & T Publishing, $26.95, hard copy; $18.99, e-book), I ignored my over-scheduled life and  jumped at the chance. She shares her talent on her blog, Crazy Mom Quilts, and has a way of elevating the lowly scrap quilt to a level that makes me wish my scrap bin was overflowing. I knew there would be fun ahead!

The projects in this book range from gorgeous quilts…

to adorable pincushions…

…to simple projects like the one I chose to try today, note cards.

Amanda’s simple, so-cool notecards. (Yeah, we can ALL do this!)

Because I am in full-blown Market prep with some super-secret project-making happening, I am using some delicious fabric from Moda designer Wenche Wolff Hatling. The Line is called Nordic Stitches and I chose it for a quilt I am making because my father’s family was from Bergen and Stavanger in Norway. The fabric spoke to my DNA!

So I have a basket of oddly shaped scraps that were sitting there staring at me. I honestly have been struggling with what to do? Do I save these small triangle shaped pieces, or toss them?

And then I made this adorable card with some of the red.

Now I think I am going to have to dig out all those lovely scraps and make holiday cards. They are simple to make and lots of fun! I would suggest this as a great projects for kids to make too.

This book is a great inspiration for making use of all those bits of leftover scraps. Filled with eye-candy quilts and projects, it is sure to get your fingers itching to stitch!

Now on to the good stuff!

Please leave a comment below about your scrap stash–is it big or small? Organized or a mess?–for a chance to win a copy of Amanda Jean’s book. Great project for small scraps and I save most every scrap. I’m sort of organized but thinking summer may be a time to re-organize. Also, this summer I plan to invite some kids over to work on quick sewing projects. Thanks for another chance to win the book!

Like my entire sewing area, my scrap bin is a giant mess. 🙂 That doesn’t keep me from rooting around in it to find just the right piece, though.

What a great idea to create notecards. Easy and wonderful and links to sewing projects for others, too. Ok, my stash is just collected in bags by project. I make clothing, curtains, etc, and a few larger quilts. I like the pincushion, pillow and now notecards options for scraps.

I love your notecard, and what a great idea to do that for holiday cards! My scrap stash isn’t very big right now; I made a king-sized quilt from scraps a while back that got through most of them. Some of it is organized into squares and the rest is a bit of a mess. Organizing could be a good rainy day project.

Those cards are so cute! I agree that anyone could make them.

I have a very small stash and it’s very well-organized. I trim everything to the widest width it can be and then slip them into baggies of similar-width things. I don’t sort by length or colour at this point, but I may switch to colour when I get a few more scraps to deal with.

My scrap stash isn’t all that large, but it’s getting bigger all the time. I have never really organized it, but I plan to start trimming and organizing what’s there slowly to get it under control. My fabric stash on the other hand is mostly neatly organized.

I’ve been quilting for a long time so my scrap stash is really big. In fact, I almost always only buy small pieces so almost everything I have is scrap. Is it organized? I put it all in a container (or two or more) and pull out of it as I want. It is organized enough for me – it helps spur my creativity and saves me precious time. Why waste time organizing when you can quilt!

I think my scrap stash is small. But really I think small in variety. I have been cutting up all those ugly fat quarters we get free on shop hops from years past and some fat quarters I won at our little retreat in Galveston last year. And at the Houston Shop Hop last month I picked up a few little bags of scraps from a few stores to add to my stash. I really want variety. Goal is a Pineapple Quilt scrappy style or maybe a project from this book! fingers crossed! Need MOJO

I would love to have this book to add to my library of sewing/quilt/craft books. My scrap stash is ‘huge’. I love the scrappy look of quilts, they remind me of what my grandmothers would have had for what they had to work with. I have my own scraps and some of my husbands grandmothers and was gifted boxes and boxes from a friend that moved to another state. They are mostly organized. This book would help me make more things with my scraps.

My stash isn’t overly large, but it’s growing. My scraps are sorted into plastic boxes based on their size and whether they are warm or cool fabrics. I’m finding that having them sorted this way (strings, larger chunks, squares/rectangles, and crumbs, has made them really accessible.)
    I LOVE the simple notecards!

Like Heidi F., who commented above me, I have scrap bins organized by color, and then a bigger scrap bin where all my scraps started. I’m moving scraps from that bin to the color bins–gradually adding more colors to the color bins, and also trying to be more careful about putting scraps directly into their correct bins rather than into the generic one. I know I’m definitely more likely to use those little scraps if they’re organized by color than if I have to dig or dive for them in the mayhem bin.

Oh, do I like scraps! Some of the bits are organized into repurposed nut containers: just right for 5″ squares, and odd sized scraps are thrown, willie-nellie, into an antique wire egg basket, while a wicker garbage pail, with its own lid: usually open, collects strips of all sizes. In a stack, I have 12 shoe boxes which contain colours: easy to see in when you want a certain colour. Yes, it’s is sometimes overwhelming but then when I need it most, I stop and sort and “tidy” up… Its great to be able to save the scraps and use them again and again…

I can hardly stand to throw away any scraps… so I definitely have a lot collected over 20 years of sewing! 🙂 They are mostly all in boxes. Lately I have been working at using them up… Definitely putting this book on my wishlist!

My scraps are mostly in a big bin all together. I also have two smaller clear containers with low volume and colored tiny pieces that are too precious to throw away. I have used Bonnie Hunter’s scrap users system on occasion to whittle down the pile and have actually used the pre-cut and color sorted scraps for projects. Right now I am making large scrap slabs as my leader-ender to make a Scrap Vortex quilt that was inspired by Amanda Jean.

I don’t have too many scraps yet, I just started quilting last year-so I keep the larger pieces in covered bins and smaller pieces in zip-lock plastic storage bags. I keep every little piece-for paper-piecing-which I really enjoy doing. Thank you, Susan

My scrap stash is small as I try to keep small pieces with the larger pieces of the same fabric. (I always end up with more fabric than the pattern calls for.)

Love the card idea. Use the funny shaped scraps to do something in a crazy patch block, It doesn’t matter what size or shape they are. Or, if they are big enough cut them into a standard block size. Happy quilting.

The note cards are such a cute idea….my scrap stash is medium as I use any pieces I can to make a 12.5″ string block then put it into my charity bin….when enough blocks are inside I make a quilt and take it to the local shelter …..

My scrap stash is pretty big, larger pieces are sorted in containers by color. The smaller pieces are separated into 3 containers (so far ) of 1.5, 2 and 2.5 inch squares. (karenbbsnow@gmail.com)

My scrap stash is big and mostly a mess. Some portions of it are sorted by color, but lots of it needs organization. Still, I dig through the mess and use my scraps often. I just love scrap quilts and projects and would love to have this book. Thanks for sharing and for the chance to win!

HOORAY! So excited Amanda published another book! 🙂
My scraps are organized by color and size. When I get an overwhelming amount of a specific scrap (for example: 2 1/2″ squares), I sift through my patterns looking for a pattern that is 2 1/2″ square friendly… in hopes of chiseling down that scrap collection! But I think my scraps are like bunnies: they seem to MULTIPLY!! LOL

My scrap stash is relatively large compared to my regular stash because I often receive gifts of other people’s unwanted scraps. I laughingly say I run a Home for Unwanted Fabric. I’m getting pickier because I can’t have my craft supplies take up so much room that I have no space to make stuff.

Oh my gosh, my stash is huge. Mostly filled with fabrics I inherited from my Godmother and mother – so not all cotton, not all cool modern new stuff. But they provide with lots of opportunity to learn and to sew scrappy! A few summers ago I bought a lot of different whites on whites so things look a little more recent now! I have it sort of organizing with strips by color on hangers, and then boxes or drawers of things by color. But still it’s a mess most of the time. This book would be fun – thanks so much for the chance!

My scrap stash is very large, as I mostly make scrap quilts. I organize mostly by color, size, or squares cut to usable sizes. The multicolor scraps always get a bit out of control…I think I need to do a value quilt to use some of them up! (Love your idea of making cheerful card holiday cards.)

My stash is fairly large and I attempt to keep them by the quilt they were used in but find I take those collections apart because I know the piece I need is in a certain place and after awhile there is an organized disorganization happening.
