Now Touring – Modern Designs for Classic Quilts by Kelly Biscopink and Andrea Johnson

I help write the book reviews here at GenQ and so some days I swear it is like my birthday as I unwrap brown envelopes to find what new book is waiting for me. To a quilting book junky like me, I really could not have a better job.

Just before I was getting ready to leave for Houston, this book arrived in the mail.

Now I had the pleasure of meeting Kelly at Spring market. We chatted for quite a while and I thought she was just the sweetest person. She didn’t let on that she had a fantastic new book coming out. So when I saw that she was co-author of Modern Designs for Classic Quilts, I was doubly excited.

I only had a brief chance to look through the book before Market and what I saw, I liked. I stared at the book longingly as I packed for Houston. I wanted desperately to take it with me, read it on the plane and perhaps ask to have it autographed.  The problem was that I knew that I would be coming home laden with goodies (Just see my post on my personal blog) and it would be one more book I would have to carry. So I sadly left the book on my nightstand as I left for the airport.

Now, I want to preface this review by telling you that I read A LOT of quilting books.  I have been a quilter for 20 years and in that time I have read all I can get my hands on in the way of sewing, stitchy goodness. Since doing reviews with GenQ I seriously read nearly a dozen books per week.

Modern Design for Classic Quilts is full to the brim with beautiful step by step photos of how to make a quilt. I especially love when Kelly and Andie have different ways of doing something, pinning blocks together to sew for example, they show photos with both techniques. I enjoy teaching others to sew so this feature was especially appealing to me.

The quilt designs are visually stunning and the designs truly are a modern twist on the classic designs.

Take Andie’s design “In The Clouds” which is her modern interpretation of the Flying Geese block…

Or Kelly’s design “Must Stash”  which is a classic diamond block that she used to showcase all of her favorite fabrics that she couldn’t bear to cut up.

Filled with patterns for kaleidoscope, hexagons, log cabins, New York Beauty and spiderwebs, this book is filled with patterns, inspiration and techniques to take your quilting to a new level.

And I am not saying that just because I really like Kelly and Andie…
