Now Touring: I Love Precut Quilts! by Tricia Maloney

teri • February 02, 2017 • 42 Comments

There is something irresistible about those lovely rounds of fabric strips that sit near the register at your local quilt shop. When I spy a jellyroll of that latest line from Victoria, Tula or Kaffe, I honestly can’t control myself. I must have it. The problem is, once I get it back to my sewing space, I can’t bring myself to break into those perfectly aligned bundles of strips! I mean, first of all, once you open it, there’s no getting it back into anything as pretty. Second, those strips are 2 1/2 inches. What, now, are you supposed to do with them?

So when our blog mistress Teri Lucas asked me if I wanted to cover the blog hop for Tricia Maloney’s new book, I Love Precut Quilts!: 16 Fast, Fun Projects  (C & T Publications, 2017 hard copy $21.95; e-book $14.99), I jumped at the chance. While I love looking at my pretty stacks of precuts, the fabric is screaming “USE ME!” and I would rather use it up and make room for new fabrics.

See? I told you I had stacks o’ precuts!

There are 16 quilt patterns in Tricia’s book, and they run the pre-cut gamut from charm squares to fat quarters and every slice in between. Her pattern styles vary from contemporary to modern design to traditional, so every kind of quilter and fabric collector will find something to love. You know, when it comes to style, it’s really more about the fabric choices than the pattern. I love that Tricia’s designs are so versatile that you can make the quilts your own.

The designs vary in complexity with enough challenge to keep you interested for quite a while. (And don’t you love when a pattern book has several patterns that you just gotta make?)

On my “to make” list are Spritely, which makes short work of a jelly roll:

I’m also crushing on the uber-easy Paper Lanterns, which just takes a few chops of a charm pack :

Fun, easy and quick. (My three favorite words, other than Manhattan, bourbon and Luxardo cherries. Okay, so that’s four words…) It’s especially easy using fabric already trimmed into manageable chunks. I really like that because sometimes hand pain makes it hard for me to do a lot of cutting.

This book is also extremely beginner friendly. Wouldn’t it be perfect to package up the book with a layer cake or some fat quarters to give to that budding “quilter in training” in your life? Or simply get this book for yourself. If you are like me, you really need to start diving into that stash and make something already.

Now for the good part! Tricia Maloney and C & T Publishing are giving away a copy of I Love Precut Quilts! To enter the contest, simply leave a comment and tell me what pre-cut is your Kryptonite. Are you like me and can’t resist a jellyroll? Or are fat quarters your undoing? One entry per person. US Winner will receive a hard copy, international winner an e-book. We will announce the winner on Thursday February 9th. Good luck!

I don’t have a big stash, but there are many times I can’t pass up a great deal on FQ’s.

I like FQs best, except for the price of those bundles! I most often buy layer cakes and find that I can do lots of different things with them. But it always involves cutting the squares up, which makes me wonder if I’m defeating the purpose of precuts.

I love fat quarters. I usually make scrappy quilts, so fat quarters gives me the variety of fabrics and still be large enough pieces of fabric that I can do most anything with them. Thanks for the giveaway!

I am like you in that I just love how pretty jelly rolls look, and I am sucked into buying them, but then hate to open them and ruin how perfect they look. It is a problem for sure, haha. I like to use charm packs.

Kryptonite? heehee. My go-to pre-cut are 2 1/2″ strips. A full jelly roll, even better! I have been known to make a small folio that holds mini legal pads (5×7 size) and sell them to raise money for our Relay for Life team. 🙂

Spritely looks interesting – I have not seen this in the other bloghop posts. Hmm. Rather yummy.
