Now Touring: Emily Cier, Scrap Republic and Orange?

jake • October 06, 2011 • 227 Comments

Q: What did the farmer say to the green pumpkin?
A: Why orange you orange?

Q: Why did the orange stop rolling down the hill?
A: It ran out of juice.

Okay Q-bies, now that we’ve got your ears back from bad jokes (and we’re not promising we’re done yet) let’s talk about one of our favorite things: The color orange.

We’re living in the season of orange here in the states. From Halloween to Thanksgiving, it’s all about the orange. We contend that until recently, orange was one of the most misunderstood and underappreciated colors. But the color times, they are a changing. Now orange in all of its glory, from hot fire red to sweet and juicy peach, is popping up in all sorts of places. Clothing, furniture, house paint, cars and, of course, fabric! It’s kinda hard to avoid, so we say, don’t try. Instead embrace your inner orange and enjoy.

Orange is the perfect color to spice up all sorts of quilts. When used as a complement to blue, it draws the eye in over and over. It’s just as effective with its secondary pals purple and green. The trick is often to play with the hue—make it lighter or darker when you’re playing with purer hues of another color. Or just go all out and make that statement when using orange’s pure tone with red and yellow, its color wheel neighbors. It’s all good.

So why are we chatting up orange today? Well, we have a guest in the GenQ house– Emily Cier, author of the amazing book, Scrap Republic: 8 Quilt Projects for Those Who Love Color, by C&T Publishing. She’s done a brilliant thing here and started her blog tour organized around colors. Each day, as she turns the color wheel, another site will host her brilliance, and we picked orange.

Scrap Republic is the best answer to that age-old quilter’s question: What the h— do I do with all of these scraps? Emily (of Carolina Patchwork fame) has eight quilts all made from a rainbow of scraps. No color is left behind in her designs, which have you sort your scraps into color families before working through the projects. From the smallest possible group of threads to large scraps big enough to serve as background fabrics, you will never again question the value of that little leftover piece.

If you have scraps, (yeah, right, who doesn’t?) grab this manual and turn them into quilts.

Now back to orange. Let’s start with the word, which is weird enough. “Orange” comes from a transliteration of the Sanskrit naranga, which comes from the Tamil naru, which means fragrant.

Oranges are associated with fertility–and by extension weddings–because orange trees are an evergreen that simultaneously produces flowers, fruit and foliage. (Sorta like the quilter who works on several things at once, or the multitasking mom?)

Megan's stash, and one of her daughters hiding in the background. We say hold on to your stash, Megan! She has that glint in her eye...

Here we have a picture of Megan’s famous orange stash. No, this is not some new cocktail recipe (though this is such a good idea that we decided to make one up for you all; see below). This is what she said about it:

“I love orange. My iPad cover is orange. My favorite mug is orange. And I have a small collection of orange fabrics going, which is small only because I am picky about my prints.”

Jake used to hate, hate, hate orange. Had something to do with a difficult parent and his choice of an orange Plymouth Volare station wagon that embarrassed the heck out of her when she was growing up. It screamed 1970s and that was painful enough. But as a grown up quilter, she noticed that her fave palette for most projects was based on the combination of teal and rust, AKA blue and orange. Once she resolved herself to the belief that orange might have a place in her heart after all, orange came out of the shaded closet (rust) and became strong and vibrant.

And we have five yummy prizes to hand out for this stop on the tour. Check them out:

1. Scrap Republic from C&T Publishing

2. Scrap Republic Eco Tote from C&T Publishing

3. Bag of Scraps from Robert Kaufman Fabrics

4. ROY G BIV Essential Cotton Thread in Red, Pumpkin, Butter, Lime, Cerulean, Midnight, and Red Violet from Connecting Threads

5. Mrs. Roy G. Biv Pattern from Carolina Patchworks (this is the pattern that inspired Emily to write the book!)

The way you qualify for this drawing is to write out this statement on the comment section below, and make sure to fill in the blank with YOUR answer. (Hint: We especially like anything that makes us tear up, laugh or think you’re a genius.) Megan, our Bitchy Stitcher, is having a tough week with a double-ear infected offspring on her hands, so we’re gonna let her pick out the four winners. So make her cry, chuckle or bestow you with the quilting Mensa award and you could see some goodies in your mailbox! Oh, and let’s give a hearty shout out to our generous sponsors. Orange you glad you stopped by today?

Here’s your comment to play with:

When I think about the color orange, I feel _______________________________________________ .

Hey, the fun ain’t over yet! The rest of Emily’s amazing Technicolor blog tour continues tomorrow and on as follows:

October 7th – YELLOW – Pat Sloan

October 8th – GREEN – Connecting Threads

October 9th – BLUE – Scott Hansen – Blue Nickel Studios

October 10th – INDIGO – John Adams – Quilt Dad

October 11th – VIOLET – Allie Heath – Robert Kaufman

And, because we promised:

GenQ’s Orange Stash

Cocktails for the whole minigroup! Just make sure the rotary cutters are stashed before you tuck into our Stash. It’ll make sorting scraps by color so much more fun.

2 cups dry white Spanish wine (perhaps a Rueda)

2 cups fresh orange juice (about 8 to 10 oranges)

¼ cup white Italian vermouth

¼ cup sugar

1 teaspoon orange flower water (flavoring often found in Middle Eastern groceries and specialty stores. Or online.)

1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice

1 orange, sliced

1 lime, sliced

In a large pitcher, combine the wine, orange juice, vermouth, sugar, orange flower water and lemon juice. Stir in the orange slices. Cover and chill 1 to 2 hours to blend flavors. Stir in the lime slices and serve in chilled glasses. Serves 6

Cheers, baby!

NOTE: Wow! That’s a lotta comments! Megan has the sick kids tucked away in bed with a movie and she is picking the winners right now. Stop back tomorrow (Saturday, October 8) to find out who won!

When I think about the color orange, I feel hot and dusty. It’s a colour that reminds me of the ochre fields in Roussillon in the heart of Provence, and after you’ve walked through all that dust coloured every hue from deep red right through orange and yellow to white, you end up with totally orange feet! As we go there in the summer, the heat relecting off the brightly coloured ground and from the sun beaming down leaves you less than delicately perspiring, still, there’s a fab ice cream shop just outside with gorgeous homemade ice cream and sorbets…

…I feel like…I must have recovered from the 70’s! Too much avocado green, harvest gold and orange/rust shag carpet during my early years made me think I would never, ever like these colors. To my surprise, they are now among my favorites!

When I think of orange I feel NAUSEOUS. I used to drink Fuzzy Navels, and on occasion in my younger years, a few too many. I may still be recovering? I don’t drink at all anymore (water only). I don’t think I’ve used orange in sewing yet. I think perhaps I am ready to step out of the box and go on an adventure. I love fall and all the colors in association with it, so rust is certainly an orangy color. And if I were doing a rainbow of colors orange would certainly be used. I just can’t imagine doing a whole quilt of orange quite yet.

Okay, I am not a lover of orange–not since my first job at the A&W where I had to where an orange and brown jumper everyday and went home smelling like a French fry. Now I work in a quilt shop and I’m amazed at the gorgeous quilts I see coming in the door that have splashes (or more) of orange. They really wouldn’t be as great without the orange, I have to admit! I love scrappy quilts and also repro fabrics, so I am warming up to “cheddar” which is as close to orange as I get.

When I think about the color orange, I feel …….it’s time to stay home after the sun goes down and stay in my sewing room where it’s safe (aside for the potential dangers of a rotary cutter accident). Orange reminds me of all the hunters in our area proudly wearing their pretty orange hunting coats and vests to go out and make the deer run in all directions. ACK! And then I think back to about 4 years ago when hubby and I went to see Wayne Brady in Iowa. Coming home from the show as we entered WI BAM~ a deer ran into the front corner of our car and slid the entire length of our car bouncing and making dents of damage along with way BUT, he left the side view mirror intact. yay! Ok well, that was fun.NOT. And then we continued home thankful the car wasn’t totalled although the entire side and front corner wasn’t in the best of shape but, at least we could drive home. We then get near Monroe, Wi and into the next county on our way home (there are only 3 counties between the Iowa state line and our home in IL) and we were still talking about how lucky it was that deer hadn’t totalled the car when ……..wanna guess what happened?…….BAM………nooooooooooooo ANOTHER DEER WHAT? Ok so this one tried to say howdy to hubby by coming directly at him as he was driving and oh yea, he felt the need to remove that side view mirror his cousin had left intact and do much more damage as he tap danced along the length of the car once again. Those deer in WI must take some type of dance lessons the way they both did just that while pummiling the side of our poor car. BUT, car really messed up at this point but yay, we can still drive it although we did discuss the possibility that maybe we should get a room for the night since we were both pretty scared to drive any further considering we had just nailed two deer in 1 1/2 hours in 2 different counties AND we still had one county left to go before reaching home. ACK! So we started toward home again, a bit more nervous than the last restart to home and as we turned onto another road toward home we both jumped in fright……why? Because a very pretty orangish-gold LEAVES were falling from the tree and right in front of our car. HA ! Two adults scared from orange leaves? Go ahead you can laugh. We sure did. And we still laugh about how we were scared by leaves.

So yea, orange makes me think of our night when we went to see Wayne Brady because it was during hunting season when the men wear orange and scare the deer so they run all over the place not paying attention to the cars driving on the roads and of the gorgeous Fall colored leaves that scare two grown adults.

In case you wonder ~ NO! We do NOT yet go anywhere West of here into WI in the Fall yet. I’m still get nervous about driving this time of the year.

My Grandlittles have been inundating me with knock-knock jokes lately…and rather than rip my hair out if I hear the “orange you glad I didn’t say banana?” joke once more, the humor of hearing this same, silly joke over and over just has to crack me up…and not in a bad way.

When I think about orange I feel road rage! I drive 500 miles to and from Salt Lake City, on average twice a month and have for nearly 30 years! Right now there is major road construction, think widening and rerouting the one freeway for 40 miles in the 2nd busiest stretch of road on that freeway. I endured the nightmare of of pre 2002 Olympic freeway reconstruction, and when I visit my daughter who lives north of SLC there is ongoing construction for over 50 miles. South of me they are adding a truck lane, which means restricted lanes and snail speeds in both directions. Then as soon as it warms up, we have ongoing road maintenance, up go the orange flags, the darling orange cones restricting us to one lane, and the orange signs warning that fines are doubled in road construction zones. Zones that last for 30 – 50 miles at a stretch! I’d take other freeways, but wait, we don’t have any other freeways to get from north to south! There are a couple of secondary roads but sooner or later they all end at the FREEWAY!!!!!
Aren’t you glad you asked! Wow, I didn’t know that was all in my head.
Actually, when I’m not in the car, I quite like splashes of orange. It makes me happy (Ha), energized, cheerful. I painted my boy’s bedroom orange with blue accents (this in the 70’s). I think that may have contributed significantly to the noise and off the wall level of that room. When we went to boring white, things calmed down considerably. I love fall colors, leaves red, gold, yellow and orange are exquisite .

Aplogies I work in finance so am probably a little more creative about the color green 🙂 I am also though a mother of seven so have walked the whole infected wee one line a few times and truly feel your pain. I would recommend making yourself a really great grilled cheese sandwich and cracking open a cold cactus cooler and just forgetting about it all for a little while 🙂

When I think about the color orange, I feel refreshed and revitalized. Orange juice always refreshes my taste buds in the same way that my orange fabric refreshes and revitalizes my quilting palette. At the moment I have shades of orange all around me in my studio just waiting to be dished up into the next juicy quilt.

When I think about the color orange, I feel nostalgic for college. When I started college I was not very impressed with the college colors of orange and maroon, which to me didn’t seem to go together. But now I love the combination as it reminds me of college and of the beauty of fall. There’s nothing like a college football game on a crisp autumn day where the stands are full of fans decked out in orange and maroon shirts!

I think about my youth and eating (not drinking) Tang. Putting a heaping tablespoon of Tang (orange-colored powder) in a glass with an itty-bitty bit of water. The powder would turn into a bright orange, cream-soup consistency. Yum.

Now that I’m older, orange reminds me of Metamucil containers and I’m so glad I don’t have any need to buy, mix and drink it!

When I think about the color orange, it reminds me of our fifth grade play, I had one line to recite, ‘What rhymes with orange?’ With all the slang that’s been added to the English language over the years, I’m surprised there isn’t a rhyming word yet. Did you know that nothing rhymes with purple or silver either?

Ok, so when I think about the color orange, I feel Happy and warm inside! and I’m not just saying it!! It’s been my favorite color since my childhood!! I’m 52, and I’ve stuck with orange through all those years that you were even embarrassed to say that your favorite color was orange: everybody else liked blue or green or red or yellow: never orange!!! I’ve been so happy to see orange on the front of so many quilt magazines lately: it’s finally coming into it’s own, and people are seeing that it is an extremely delicious color!!! Ok, for something crazy: when I was in college I made an orange velveteen coat!!! I even wore it!!! It was an incredible pumpkin-y orange, and in the velveteen it had wonderful lights and darks that made it just vibrant!! I don’t have it now, and I wonder what I ever did with it: Probably got embarrassed to wear it after about a year 😛 (And I hope your youngster gets over the ear infection QUICKLY!!! I feel for you!)

When I think about the color orange, I feel anxious and scared. It’s a VERY scary color to me. So full of energy and enthusiasm, bursting with smiley promise and fiery gusto. It’s bright and cheery on a sunny day, yet humble and calm on a cool fall day. It makes the butterflies in my belly go crazy. It is NOT in my personal palette; I’m a black, beige, brown, white and sometimes red and teal person. All of these feelings about orange are exactly why my new goal is to use orange in my art more. It scares me, but I don’t want to be afraid of orange anymore. Facing my fears! I’ve started by using orange in my art journal and I’ve got 2 quilts in my WIP pile with orange as a main color. I’m going to look orange in the face and say “HA! You don’t scare me anymore. In fact, I kinda like ya!” I draw the line at wearing orange, though.

Purple and orange go very well together!! She is my Grand-daughter

When I think about the color orange I feel defiant! I was the color orange in a school program and my mama fussed about what an ugly color it was the whole time she made my costume. I’ve loved orange ever since.

Very appropriate for me as autumn has really arrived with its chilly nights and great warm colours and also I am getting bigger by the day with little baby growing inside so will soon look like a pumpkin I am sure!

When I think of orange I am grateful. Years ago in Texas my family was homeless and friends lent us their orange station wagon….we fondly called “her” the Tiajuana Taxi. Times are much better now….my children are grown, my husband is retired, and I spend my free days quilting.

When I think about the color orange, I feel LIKE A WOMAN! Opps, you got me boogeying in my seat now, which is always good on a Friday. Believe it or not, I too didn’t go the orange thang, and then started to pay attention to the little devil and decided it needed to peak into my closet whether in my c.w. stash or my batik stash. Funny how colors can just grow on you. Orange you glad I commented???

When I think about the color orange I think of the House of Orange and all the good memories I have of living in the Netherlands for four years. And all of the dorky Dutch guys who wore way way too short shorts in the summer while riding their bikes.

When I think about the color orange, I feel “as this time of wildfires in Texas” sad for all of the displaced people. I give thanks that so few lives have been lost but I cannot help but wonder the emotions as these residents watch the “orange fireballs” destroying their homes, memories, and of course those beautiful quilts they created. _______________________________________________

When I think about the color orange, I feel like a kid cracking open a bottle of orange crush and having that smell hit your olfactory sense feelers. I feel the jealousy that my friends got to drink “Tang” and I had to drink the real stuff. I smell the fresh scent of peeling an orange at lunchtime and spraying myself in the eyeballs and having to repeat that “I’m not crying” to every single person who would talk to me. Most of all, I feel like chocolate. But then, I always feel like chocolate. Orange chocolate! YES – Terry’s chocolate orange. Now why do they only come out at Christmas anyway. Everyone NEEDS some chocolate year round. At least they don’t spray me in the eyes!

I thought I was doing good to stay hydrated, but one of the Doctors yelled at me for overloading the baby with sugar 🙁 (my normal doctor would’ve been nicer explaining that to me)
yoo-hoo turned out just fine though 🙂

I always arrived at school with a bright ORANGE tongue, but a smile on my face! lol So, yes- orange makes me feel …YOUNG!!! 🙂

When I think about the color orange, I think about fall and the change of colors, cooler weather, pumpkin coffee and pie, Halloween and trick or treeters, football, and Thanksgiving too. While I like the color, I don’t do orange cause I look terrible in it. So that being said, I hope I never get arrested for anything cause I’d have to have my jail clothes in another color. And I also feel sorry for orange…so many people say their favorite color is “anything but orange”, at least judging from fabric and block swaps I’ve been involved in. Sort of the Rodney Dangerfield of the fabric world, it don’t get any respect.

When I see the color orange I feel nostalgic, 50 years ago I tasted my first Orange Crush pop. It was the last day of grade one and I lived in the country, so I rode a bus home. The bus driver stopped at the gas station and told all of us kids we could have a pop. A favorite taste and each time I drink one it takes me back to the old gas station with the cooler full of pop bottles. There was a bottle opener on the side of the cooler. I didn’t know how to use the bottle opener, you see it was my first pop, so the gas station owner opened it for me.
