Many Hands2Help Make light work

There’s an old adage, “Many hands make light work.” In the olden days of quilting, women would get together and help each other hand-quilt the quilt tops made over the long hard winters. The many hands stitching lightened the load for the woman having her quilts done. Well that and catch-up on all the neighborhood news. (And do we ever love news!)

With that in mind here’s a little bit about the Hands2Help Charity Quilt Challenge hosted by Sarah Craig of Confessions of a Fabric Addict. This challenge, now in its 4th year, has given over 165 quilts to various charities. Woot! Woot!

This years opportunities:

 Happy Chemo, an organization that gives quilts to people who are going through chemotherapy treatments for cancer.  This is the pet project of Emily who  blogs at Em’s Scrap Bag – she’s in the process of collecting 1500 quilts for them (over the course of many years).

Quilts of Compassion

Quilts of Compassion, a 501-c-3 organization that collects quilts for a variety of charitable purposes, but most recently distributing them to tornado victims in the midwest.  They have given away over 46,000 quilts in the past 14 years, including 2,000 taken and handed out in the Moore, Oklahoma area over a two-week period.  Janice, who started this ministry as a result of a quilt she received in the hospital after a bad car wreck, is an amazing woman and has a passion for providing quilts to all in need.

Quilts for Hurricane Surviors

Hurricane Sandy survivors in New Jersey are the focus of the senior high school students of Gladeville Baptist Church in Tennessee.  For the past five years they have been working on mission in New Orleans, serving Katrina victims during their spring, fall and summer breaks from school.  Now they are moving their mission field to New Jersey to continue the same type of work with Hurricane Sandy survivors.  They will be helping with rebuilding efforts and any other type of assistance they can provide.  Providing quilts to the survivors not only gives them a warm quilt-y hug but provides the students with a way to start conversations and provide other assistance.

    Making my first quilt for Quilts of Compassion. Already have the fabrics and batting; now just need to get cutting and sewing. 🙂
