Our New Baby, V.2

by melissa on August 11, 2012

Second novels and second issues have a lot in common. They can sometimes be harder to  complete than their “firsts.”  The rewards, though, of seeing your hard work in print are just as sweet, and we’re excited to introduce you to GenQ Fall 2012!

Speaking of sweet, don’t you just love that angel on the cover? There’s a back story here, and you know how we love to share.  This issue’s cover story, featuring quilter/blogger Lynn Harris of the Little Red Hen, started evolving when she submitted a quilt design to us to be considered for publication. (We loved it, BTW, and it’ll be in our next issue, if you don’t mind a little tease.) So as we cruised around Lynn’s blog, getting acquainted with her style and her story, we were totally seduced by the amazing images she’s captured of her family’s life in rural Michigan.

The more we talked with Lynn, and learned how creativity has shaped her life–from the challenges of  raising children in the middle of  a very long-term historic house rehab to the dignified coping with a chronic illness–we knew we had to bring her story to you.

Now, this took some persuasion, because Lynn was keenly aware that typically, magazines feature only finished homes all tricked out in impeccable decorator style.  That isn’t the life we live, though, is it? And what we love about Lynn and her family’s style is that it is authentic and abundantly real. And creativity–in Lynn’s case through sewing, quilting, photography and even raising crops to feed her friends and family–plays a central role.

So Lynn and her daughter set about helping us tell their story. Her daughter, whom we call P, gamely posed over and over and over again, even putting on “fall-ish” clothes in 100-degree heat. (Now there’s a Q-Bie!) Our Jake Finch wrote a masterful story, and paired with Lynn’s equally masterful images, we think it’s a winner.

There’s so much more to share with you about this issue, including stuff there just wasn’t room for in the pages. We’ll do a bit of that in the coming days. Our partnering quilt and fabric shops have already begun receiving their shipments, so check your local stores first. (To make this easy for you, we’ve got a full list of our bricks-and-mortar and online shop partners at this link: http://generationqmagazine.com/where-to-buy-genq/.) Later this month, we’ll also start showing up on selected newsstands in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.  And we’ll offer single-issue sales from our website later this month, as well.

As always, thanks for your support. Enjoy!

We’re way too young for subscriptions. It takes a lot of readership to support them. And we have such wonderful shops–online and real-time–who carry us and want to continue to do so. Lastly, we offer single issue sales on our website. We just hold them back until the shops have had a chance with us first. Hang in there. Tell your buds. In time we will get there.
