Happy New Year Q-bies! In 2012, We will be bringing in some of our friends from the blog-o-sphere to design our holiday blocks that have been evolving with us. Today we are bringing you a new GenQ New Year Block designed for you by our dear friend John Adams of Quilt Dad fame! John said yes to being our guinea pig …ahem…premiere guest Block designer, much to our delight!
Here’s what John has to say about his Modern Starlings Block:
“The beginning of a new year is a very exciting time, and I was honored that the gang at Generation Q asked me to design a block to commemorate the start of 2012. As the new year takes flight, I couldn’t think of a better opportunity to actualize a block idea that’s been forming in my head for the past few weeks: a modern interpretation of birds in flight that I’m calling Modern Starlings. I was inspired by this amazing and highly moving video of starlings flying in synchronized formation – I can’t recommend watching it enough!
“Gen Q suggested something “simple & non-traditional”, and I hope this fits the bill. You can make a single starling (at 6” x 12”), a double starling (at 12” square), or an entire flock for a unique quilt design. Personally, I’m already picturing a quilt with starlings scattered across the front.
“I hope you enjoyed making this block. If you make a Modern Starlings block (or quilt), I would love to see it! Be sure to let me know. I’d love for you to add it to the Quilt Dad is My Homeboy Flickr group!”
We are thrilled with John’s “Taking Flight” theme as we take off for even higher ground in our progress towards being a full-fledged print and digital magazine in this new year! Let us all take that same vision into our lives and our sewing. GenQ staffer Scott Hansen has already made up a couple of these Modern Starling blocks and posted them over on his blog with a further announcement of where this inaugural block will be going later in the year. We are so very happy and thankful to you as well for your joining us in our flight.
Happy skies to you this New Year!
