It’s Giveaway Day!

by megan on December 12, 2011

Welcome to Generation Q Magazine! And thanks for participating in the annual Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day! There’s nothing we love more than a great party and hanging out with people who love fondling fabric.

The treasure in our trove today is this stack of 14 fat quarters from Clothworks’ Laurel Burch Basics collection (cat not included). Can’t you just feel the softness between your fingers and sniff the pristine freshness of the fabric that’s just waiting for the bite of your rotary cutter and the quick flash of your needle?

Bet we’ve got your attention now!

A lot of you may not be familiar with Generation Q Magazine, and the quilty fun that we just love to stir up for our readers, so allow us to introduce ourselves. Since last July, we’ve been delivering daily magazine-style content for modern and contemporary quilters/stitchers/crafters from our site, generationqmagazine.com. We like to make you laugh, prime your creative juices, introduce you to new designers and q-artists, and help you live a more inspiring, creative and stitchy life. A daunting mission for lesser souls, but our far-flung staff of four looooves doing this and delights in having fun with our Q-Bies, er, readers.

GenQ is brought to you by Jake Finch, a designer, quilter, author and former editor of Quilter’s Home magazine; Melissa Thompson Maher, longtime sewist and textiles writer and also former editor of Quilter’s Home; Megan Dougherty, quilty humorist extraordinaire and the wit behind The Bitchy Stitcher (not always safe for work, that one); and our Cabana Boy Scott Hansen, a quilter, writer and designer in his own right via Blue Nickel Studios.

We blend our distinct—but equally fun-loving—personalities in GenQ to bring you a stitch smorgasbord of information. Topics and features include:

Unraveled, where Megan Dougherty unleashes her legendary wit in fictional q-life scenarios that’ll have you howling and spewing;

Playdate, with fun, inspiring projects and patterns from staff and guest designers;

I Am GenQ, where we profile well-known (and up-and-coming) modern/contemporary designers, and reveal the personality behind the professional;

Cuts, where we share the latest new designs from fabric companies;

Scoop, which just scratches the surface of the newly published books and other media flooding into our part of the q-universe.

Oh, there’s more. Way more. But you just need to experience GenQ for yourself. We hope you’ll take some time to look around and even come back to see what we have up our patchwork sleeves every day. Our Subscribe button, for those of you who use RSS readers, is at the upper right hand corner and you can even get our posts via email—just look to your right in the sidebar under our list of post categories to find the form.

To be eligible to win the stack of fats, just leave us a comment below telling us what sort of crafty or stitchy project you’re working on right now, and we’ll leave the comments open until 5 p.m. PST on Friday, December 16. Stop back here on December 18th where we’ll announce the winner both in our regular post and in this one (plus we’ll contact the winner via email).

Good luck and we hope you’ll come back to join in the daily fun here at GenQ!

UPDATE:

In a random numerical pick, we chose Carole M to win our 14-pack of Laurel Burch Basics from Clothworks. Carole, we’ve got your e-mail, so watch your in-box. We’ll be contacting your for a mailing address later on tonight. Congratulations! And thank you to everyone who played along. Big fun!

I’m working on a pile of doll clothes for various granddaughters and other small folk, and the scraps are going into small quilts for said dolls. Recycling the scraps from other projects is fun, and taking it down to the very small pieces for the little quilts is very satisfying to someone who hates to toss anyting!

I’m trying to finish up a quilt for my sweetie for Christmas. I gave him the top last year, and he is disappointed that so many quilts have gotten completed in the meantime while his is still unfinished. Well, he’s on a job-finding mission in Hawaii, so I pieced a back, basted the sadnwich, and have been quilting it for a week, now. I’m half done and he comes home on Wednesday. After that’s done, I have three more to finish up for Christmas. Wish me luck!

But I want the kitty. :( That’s okay. My kitty hates other kitties anyway. I tried that once.
I’m not working on anything right now. I did a quilt over the weekend, it was a just-for-fun thing that changed courses almost immediately after starting to cut it out. That’s the fun of building everything in your head. If I had started with a pattern, I would’ve finished with a pattern-quilt and that’s just not as fulfilling.
Now I need to start working on designing something for the corners of my 2012 show quilt. But I really just want to skip it and start working on my 2013 show quilt instead. Le sigh!

Working on adapting the jelly roll challenge for a beginning quilt class that I teach. You’ve got cutting, sewing straight seams and sewing a quarter inch seam. In 4 classes you get a baby quilt. Use a light fabric for one of the stripes and there’s lots of room to play with embroidery to personalize the quilt.

Thanks GENQ for the chance to win those awesome fabrics. I’m here via Scott’s post at Blue Nickel. Right now I am handquilting a queen sized sampler bed quilt – the sampler blocks came from the P2 Modern quiltalong and the Bloggers Block A Palooza (sp?) plus some from the 100 Blocks v3 from Quiltmaker. I used Origins by Basic Grey. Can you tell that I’m delighted with the way it looks?

Got a couple of things happening. Quilted fleecy camera bags for my husband, a scrappy pincushion and a laptop bag. Plus a gazillion ufo’s and yet to be realised ideas floating about somewhere in my mind, they are like circling birds looking for a place to land.

Hi, Becky. Quilter’s Home was the mag I wrote for (and Jake and Melissa edited) that you could get in the store, but that’s gone now. Right now, GenQ is only online, but we plan to go a digital quarterly next year. Don’t worry – we’ll keep everyone updated!
